I don't hope Twitter holds on. The internet wants to be fragmented. Putting all of humanity in one single room together was a bad idea. (That said, I'll be the last one here, to turn out the lights.) noahpinion.blog/p/the-internet

We know how social networks die. Slowly, and then all at once. Folks start to go, lowering the cost-benefit ratio for remaining members, setting up a cascade where departing users prompt their friends to go, too. Its likelier when there are alternatives. I hope Twitter holds on.

Are you going to try out Threads when it comes out and run across multiple networks, or stick with twitter and substack until the bitter end (if it comes?)

I'd argue the opposite, that the internet is the great aggregator. "Scale" can be achieved in such a way not possible before. Physical constraints don't matter anymore. Yes, small actors persist but... Advertising, cloud computing, social media, Amazon, etc. shows "Kamappa".
The advantage of a common forum for everyone is that it makes it easier to get out of your own echo chamber. You can find out what other, very different, people and organizations are thinking and doing. Sometimes you accidentally learn something valuable that way.
Twitter has about 200m active users, Facebook has +3b. Snapchat has 750m. Hell, even Reddit has more than 500m. Freaking Pinterest has more users than Twitter. The only reason we hear about Twitter so much is because journalists and politicians are addicted to it.
Do you see TikTok as a big single room, or a place where the algorithm effectively fragments people into niche groups and separate echo chambers?
I've seen 4 eras of SF tech people: Era 1 (2000s): hoodie-wearing utopians who wanted to unite all humanity through social media and raves Era 2 (2010s): hard-charging refugees from the finance bust who were always trying to sell you on their mobile app startup

so funny that goldman sachs lost $1 billion due to the apple credit card partnership and it seems to be primarily because apple created a credit card experience that is not predatory towards its users (e.g. no fees other than interest, regular payment reminders)
