School is, to an extent, just performing a childcare function (but that seems fine)

I know homeschool parents who spend less than three hours a day “doing school” and their kids test several grades above age level. The kids spend their time building forts, climbing trees, digging holes, helping out around the house, and reading books for fun.

Beyond that, my son’s class includes kids whose parents don’t speak English and kids whose parents didn’t finish high school — if those kids don’t get taught reading & math in school they’re not going to learn it.

unless those are unusual outliers, having examples of getting 8 hour worth on semi lazy 3 hours has evidentiary value of refuting the maximal pro school views

There are a lot of kids who couldn’t be better served in any classroom than they could by giving them a textbook and telling them that they can be done with the class when they complete a proctored end-of-course test.

The state providing universal child care for kids of school age is really good. Without that option many women would be precluded from the workforce. Splitting kids up by ability more than age would probably improve education outcomes.

My kid is above grade level, which was true when we homeschooled and also now that she goes to public school. The argument is spurious because of selection bias. (Especially for anecdotal selected homeschool kids!)
