The key thing is they weren’t given studio notes. Makes all the difference.
A lot of Euripides is revisionist versions of traditional myths (familiar IP). And he took some flak, though IIRC not exactly for using old myths. Not everyone liked the revisionism.
Presumably none of it was under copyright so the variations had far more artistic license
