Story playing out in France of a police killing, widespread outrage, many protests, some riots, etc is obviously reminiscent of the US but one big difference — French homicide rate of 1.35/100,000 is lower than the safest American state (Maine, 1.6/100k)

Marseilles, a poor city with high crime by French standards had 32 murders last year and 861,000 residents which is so low you can’t even compare it to an American city — it’s about the homicide rate of Nebraska or New Jersey.
This dramatically greater lethality of interpersonal violence in the United States is an important driver of the US-European life expectancy gap and is relevant for differences related to housing, transit use, etc
