Structuring the pandemic small business bailout program as “loans” that get “forgiven” rather than just grants (which was the intention to begin with) ended up being such a PR win when student debt forgiveness became a big issue and so many critics of it had PPP loans forgiven

It’s not the most coherent comparison, but it’s pretty funny, and as it happens, student loan forgiveness is dramatically more progressive than PPP loan forgiveness

one last thing about the insane DeSantis ad: it shows the hard limits of the nihilistic, always vaguely ironic, “haha you can’t take a joke” mindset of the extremely online when it comes to actual political practice.

It's difficult to overstate the damage this ad is causing Ron DeSantis right now. His team is frantically working the phones as @GOP groups like LCR condemn DeSantis as a raging homophobe. What a massive, inexplicable misfire. twitter.com/DeSantisWarRoo…

A major child labor rollback goes into effect in Iowa this weekend. 14 year-olds are now allowed to work in meat coolers, 15 year-olds can join assembly lines and 16 year-olds can serve alcohol. In a few weeks, similar rollbacks take effect in Arkansas. who13.com/news/new-iowa-

the groyper/GOP junior staffer crossover is doing them real damage because groypers are horrible people who don't know how to talk to regular human beings

I met a dude yesterday who's almost 40 and has never had a job in his entire life. I feel like LA is one of maybe a handful of cities on planet Earth where you could meet a person like that.

What does this mean? Organize who? To do what? And how? It feels like “organize” is the lefty panacea for all ills without an actual thought about what that means or looks like. (Beyond holding meetings about how everyone is a gentrifier but them)

Just a bizarre conception of voting to me. The whole point of a democracy is that there is no Final Election that solves everything. There’s just a (hopefully) unending series of them where you get to keep weighing in.

There is no method of political change---whether voting, organizing, activism, revolution, bribery, etc---that has a state of total and complete victory. All human social organization is pushing uphill against entropy. That's just how it be.

a classic NIMBY move: when an actual developer shows strong intent to build a particular level of density, spend ten mins mocking up an alternative with fewer units, brag about how "amazing green gentle density with 50% affordable units" it is, even though it would never pencil

Honestly, apart from the importance she attaches to it, she's kinda cooking here? Its absurd how every Disney show or YA book has most of their main cast go to famous unis, even if they're not shown as super gifted. High School Musical is the worst offender

It is absolutely incredible that nobody in the Democratic Party ever says "ya know, maybe the universities are partially to blame for student loan costs since they're the ones charging $100,000 for a creative writing MFA at Columbia"
