4 years of living in Texas and I've come to the conclusion that the no state income tax thing is basically a scam. The property taxes are so high that they negate any savings. We are still paying as many taxes in Texas as we would in California. You save on gas I guess.

Honestly, I'd rather have higher income taxes and no property taxes than vice versa. Not only is it more efficient, it's fairer because you don't keep paying the tax on the things you own.
Is it wrong that I actually think property taxes make more sense than income taxes? The whole system of property relies on the government to make sure what you own doesn’t get stolen or illegitimately claimed by somebody else. Income otoh is way less dependent on government.
This very much applies to the MA to NH move. Only makes sense if your house in NH is worth less or you make A LOT of money. Otherwise the property taxes will bury you.
Meh, would be better to have income taxes for the rich (YMMV) and the Texas property tax for everyone else. It keeps the housing market normal while also keeping the system progressive.
If you think about it long enough, the taxes in Texas are actually kind of progressive in a way. With landowners, particularly those with high asset values, paying the most state level taxes.
We briefly looked into moving there for CA and came to the same conclusion. Austin itself has special additional property taxes too
The good news is that since housing in Houston didn't factor in the flood plain, one has a decent probability of being underwater when the next hurricane rolls in. (unless one is careful to factor that in when purchasing a house)
I like my property tax bill better than my income tax calculations. The county sends me a letter saying "pay us *amount*" and gives me an envelope to write a check & mail it back to them. No going online and filling out calculation boxes, just a single damn total.
The only reason California transplants feel like they "pay less in taxes" is the cost of living is lower in Texas. Once you account for the cost of living difference, you pretty much pay the same taxes no matter where you live.

Not my experience at all. My property taxes in TX are about equal to what I paid in CA - higher rate in TX, but lower property value, so it ended up a wash. With no state income tax, I’m way ahead on taxes here in TX.
I kinda think this is bullshit. Could be wrong, but Texas property tax is ~2.9% and property values way lower than much of California.
If state allows more housing (the case for Texas) your property value are likely to stay more stable long term. In CA it's all artificial, you are lucky if you bought something 5-10 years ago, but you are going to hit back by a crazy price, new tax base, etc. if you decided to

You should check Washington. No income tax and lowest property tax of any state I lived in. Sales tax a few percent higher.

Honestly one of the most skillful uses of TikTok has been to convince a generation that other governments have solely benign intentions while the U.S. government is Literally Hitler and every single action it takes is to personally ruin the lives of zoomers

The ban aside, this video is the perfect representation of why TikTok is bad. Soupy doesn’t offer any facts, or data, or anything of substance. Soupy is just mad and is going viral with this rage-bait because everyone is addicted to being uninformed and angry.
