The California state fire marshal was legally obliged to release the single-stair report on January 1. A month later and counting, it's nowhere in sight, and I'm hearing the draft recommends doing the bare minumum. State legislators should just pass the code update themselves.

Who could have predicted this outcome? YIMBYs need to keep the pressure on, is our voice and hope here.

While this is progress... all this bill does: instruct the State Fire Marshal to *research* and provide a report by January 1, 2026. Utterly underwhelming.
Fire Marshall's, whether state or local despise single stairs. They will oppose, slow walk, pocket veto this at every step of the way
Tbh pretty common scenario for these kind of admin reports. I’m often times it’s better to pass the law in the first place then pass a study that’ll be 3 years late
100% pass it themselves. The report recommendation—if ever released!—will be needlessly conservative anyway. Since AB835 passed, 5 states, 2 CA cities, and more have legalized single stair up to 5-6 stories. We've waited 2 years. Why wait 2+ overdue months to get 4 stories total?
