I think there needs to be a reality check...Newsom's numbers have probably improved among Democrats since this poll a few months ago but he's very unpopular nationally (there's a whole page before this of more popular Democrats).

Barring constitutional change, Trump isn't going to be on the ballot in 2028. TrumpISM will be, I'm sure, but the assumption that people are just going to want a hatred of Trump, a guy who will no longer be President, and not a vision of where we go from here seems questionable.

My criteria for what would make a good Democrat Presidential Candidate is "Can I picture them telling Trump to 'Shut Up' to his face?" Newsom ABSOLUTELY meets that criteria (as do Walz and Pritzker)

It's going to be a repeat of 2020 bc there's going to be a large field of newbies, but the state of the country will start to deteriorate so nightmarishly under Trump's incompetence that voters will be craving stability, so they'll flock to someone familiar. Like a former VP.

Well, I actually hope the Democrats have a genuine, productive primary season with many good candidates who work hard to explain a range of platforms-- from progressive to moderate. Dems need better primaries than 2020 and WAY better than mid-2024, which was obviously a disaster.

You say as Harris continues to stay at the top of most polls. The most boring prediction is usually the correct one, support will coalesce around the candidate that's seen as safest and which has the most name recognition, and Harris is by far the best known of the candidates.
