This isn't new or surprising. Tysons Corner in Vienna, Virginia, was the original location for MAE-East, the first principal exchange point for the commercialized internet. The information infrastructure of three letter US government agencies is located in Virginia. Lots of fiber
If you were under 18 when you appeared in a video or image viewable on a pornographic website, including Pornhub, Redtube, and YouPorn, a class action lawsuit may affect your rights.
Partly a legacy of that period when first DARPA and then NSF ran the internet (to the extent anyone did).

hint: the supercluster of @leopoldasch tales is already built
us-east and .gov are no joke, you can already see their dent in the grid from space
Not sure if this is still true, but at one point, two of the biggest nodes that run the internet were in NoVA and Singapore.
and in 2 specific counties of virginia. loudoun and prince william counties.
in the northern virginia area there are 428 data centers, and in the rest of virginia only 50. northern virginia alone has more data centers than either california or texas.
These data centers are not "The Internet".
They just might store a government copy, though.
A very good book on the physical internet is Andrew Blum’s “Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet.” Very readable almost a page turner.
It is because of MAE-East which became Equinix. It started in Tysons Corner before moving to Ashburn.
Come Visit Ashburn: Take the long scenic train to the Ashburn station and see the graveyard of empty vessels broadcasting our worst tendencies.
It’s long past time for everyone to diversify away, as there are climate risks there…
Seems like they'd be better off putting them near big hydro dams like they did with the big Manhattan Project facilities.
Multiplying those numbers to electricity consumption gives you these totals (TWh)
33.6 Virginia
24.6 Texas
10.6 California
6.6 Illinois
6.3 Arizona
6.1 Iowa
6.0 Oregon
5.7 Georgia
5.4 Washington
4.3 North Dakota
4.3 New York
4.2 Pennsylvania
4.0 Nebraska
3.6 Nevada
Show moreA big set piece in Chinese sci-fi movie Wandering Earth 2 involves restarting a data center near Dulles...to help save the planet.
side effect of everyone being lazy and deploying to the default regions usually named "us east 1" and "us east 2" on every cloud service provider
Not surprising at all. It’s a 20 year effort by Loudon County to seek a commercial tax base and stop relying on property taxes.
For example, people in Culpeper, VA drive by this place every day and have no idea what it is.
That is federal government data: i.e. the files they keep on Americans and others.
The internet's largest customer is located there. How is this surprising?
A big reason is cheap, coal-fired electricity in VA. Not good for climate change.
As someone who grew up in nova yeah lol every other office park has a data center
Because AOL started by Dulles. Also because of all the government contractors.
Nice article, nice format about the DC Alley
A communication network initially built by the military is mostly organized around the location of the CIA and FBI and the Pentagon. Yeah, that's really surprising.
Makes sense. That’s close to where Al Gore lived when he was building it.
Yep and if you’re in the northeast it all goes through Downtown Crossing in Boston
AWS US-East. Build redundancy into your systems, peeps!
You bet your sweet ass it does. And those data centers are paying 1/3 of my tax bill and driving up my home value. Please keep storing tik toks of idiots dancing poorly!
It shouldn't be surprising for anyone who knows even a shred about tech infrastructure.
It's where the internet cables run through (Up and down the East Coast).
You laughed. He accurately described the internet as a series of tubes and you laughed
AWS us-east-1 is in Virginia. All other answers are wrong.
VA is great for huge datacenters because it deals with very few natural disasters, is developed, and is reasonably close to the entirety of the east-of-the-Mississippi population of the US
So perhaps when China/Iran/Russia nukes us, we can ask them to focus on Fairfax county.

Klein was 100% right to say this - it's simply absurd to describe any country where millions of its subjects are denied the right to vote on the basis of ethnicity as a liberal democracy. I can't believe I even have to debate this with people!
jim justice switching parties in 2017 knowing he would run for senate in 2024 as a republican and be chronically absent due to health issues, giving democrats a near senate majority

New: Jim Justice is almost certainly WV's next senator. If he shows up to work is another question
Sources say Justice is chronically absent. Some are concerned for his health + doubt he’ll regularly show up to votes
That'll matter in the Senate. A lot politico.com/news/2024/10/1
it's weird how early on in the tech tree "land a human on the moon and bring them home safely" was
