"Neither House Democrats nor the people voting “no” in the Senate nor the people getting mad on Twitter have an actual strategy for getting what the base wants out of this, which is some kind of act of Congress saying that Trump and Musk need to conduct the government differently." slowboring.com/p/sixteen-thou

I’m part of the base but not the “progressive activist class” he’s talking about. I wanted them to demand a clean CR bill.
OK and what happens when they demand a clean CR, Republicans say no, and the government is shut down. What does that get them?
there isn't one. this is what happens when you lose elections. what they have to do is win the next election.
"The Democratic Party's actions had left many U.S. citizens feeling humiliated. Signs of a Trump victory were proclaimed well before Biden withdrew from the race. The voters had had enough."

I don’t know what “the base” wants, but I know that I don’t want SCOTUS to be able to use the CR as “Congress consented or ratified Trump’s actions.” Why do you think the CR doesn’t delineate $ program-by-program?
The strategy is to not enable the legal destruction of the federal government. Make them fight the courts with their illegal actions otherwise there will be no federal government for anyone to come back to…
I think it’s entirely reasonably to concur with ’s broader points about the situation while separately also feeling like Chuck Schumer did an absolutely horrendous job of communicating a message about the situation we find ourselves in
Normie base Dems just want senior Congressional Dems (Schumer, et al.) to show a modicum of fight here. Republicans would never just be like “Ok sure go for it” like Schumer is allowing.
Fight harder? We’re looking for democrats to fight at least a little bit. They rolled over at the first sign of pressure. You even said it will be harmful to yourself. You still may lose the fight but you have to be willing to actually get in the ring.
The choice was to enable a slush fund to which the Trump administration would impound the bill they just passed and pick who got funded based on Trump and Musk’s whims or stand tall against a historically unpopular admin and party in the face of a shutdown. They chose wrong.

No no you don’t understand Trump reeeeeally wanted a shutdown so he’s thanking Schumer here because he really bested Trump in a battle of wits and Trump is a man, that above all, respects game. Schumer didn’t surrender. He’s actually in control here. x.com/acyn/status/19…
The answer was to show up and vote last November. But they didn't and now Trump gets to run train for 2 yes. And you know what? Good. Americans deserve everything they have coming to em
Should Trump and Musk take a wrecking ball to our govt? Senator Warren says they are already doing so.

if you think Dems should fold on issues where they hold a 21 point advantage, is there any issue on which you think they shouldn’t fold?

New poll from Quinnipiac: 53% of Americans will blame TRUMP and REPUBLICANS for a shutdown.
32% would blame DEMOCRATS and 15% have no opinion.
I listened to your last pod with Megan and Ben on effective ways for regular people to counter Trump. If you live in a blue state, your reps are all Dems and you already vote Dem, there's basically nothing you can do, right?
That is a strategy. SCOTUS will hang its hat on saying it’s within constitutional grounds. Stronger language in a CR affirming congressional prerogatives does matter in court.
Well that’s on house leadership for not coming up with a strategy then no?
No one is going to blame democrats for a shutdown in a year and a half, and it’s easy to message “They have the House, Senate, and the White House. It’s their fault.” to the non-nerds. All Schumer has to say is “You have majorities. Nuke the filibuster and pass it or bargain.”
Since when did republicans care one bit about a strategy ?? If they hated something, they waited for Dems to fix it.
Why are Dems negotiating with the executioner?
It’s Republicans’ job to figure out how to get a plan that will pass.
The Dems standing as the pro-government/ pro-federal worker party would hardly want to shut the government down it seems.
Oh my god. Hoping Susan Collins does something, maybe? How more naive and fucking weak can you be
I am a Dem activist upset and my strategy would be parliamentary knife fighting to extract as many concessions as possible. There is a way to do that which I learned by serving as president of the largest Young Dem org and the 5th largest county Party.

Y'all this isn't rocket science. Democrats do not have the votes to pass anything and that sucks but anyone who has ever attended Dem Central Committee meeting can tell you that there are many ways to fight.
In fact, we might be uniquely qualified for this exact moment.

Schumer's argument about Musk supercharging the firings is odd. I don't think the majority reaction to Musk doing things that probably even the GOP caucus secretly hate is "Democrats did this." Let Trump and Musk own their bad decisions and the consequences.
GOP CR is not a clean CR. force them to pass a clean CR. the GOP CR defunds the police in DC. that is the easiest bill to message against. total layup.
If you think House democrats should’ve voted for the bill, that’s disappointedly dumb as hell from you. It only requires 50% in the House to pass. House Dems are not part of this government whatsoever. Republicans would be blamed if their House majority can’t pass a funding bill.
