the distinction here is that the US has a larger stock of housing in lower-income rural areas/ small cities - so that drags the average lower. I'd bet that if you only counted the "top 10 metro areas" by country- US real home prices have outpaced (or at least matched) these

We’re better than others but that doesn’t make us good. Besides, NY and CA are arguably anglophone-like in this regard, it’s just that the rest of the country saves us here.
Few countries have outperformed the US in delivering housing affordability over the past half century The ones who have outperformed the US have significant demographic decline or are Germany (this may have something to do with reunification)

Is there a theory why the anglo countries are so bad at this? Standard NIMBY / zoning issues as the US?
I still feel this doesn’t tell the whole story. Yes, there’s big, cheap housing in America…but is it going to be near the things you need/want to access? Talking knowledge economy, arts, culture, transit, high density communities, etc.
Depends whether you are thinking of those entering the housing market now, or those who entered 40 years ago.
Americans don't and shouldn't accept comparisons like this. We need to be the best. Don't really care how badly others are fucking up
Income vs. Housing chart needed, unfortunately total housing costs are complex. Irish house taxes are low +didn't exist at all till recently. What's house insurance cost? Cost of heating or a/c depending on climate? Single metric charts tell little about overall lives.
We are going the way of the other Anglo countries and quite quickly unless changes are made. The boomer NIMBY effect just took longer to take root in america but it's happened apace
Was talking to a friend from way back who just moved down here from Canada (Ontario). Was telling me about his experiences with applying for a mortgage, the cost of a house… it’s like the entire housing sector has lost their minds. Dude was living in a freakin’ glamping tent.
Urban coastal America (i.e. most of the twitterati) has it just as bad as the other Anglo countries. It's flyover country which still has cheap housing.
