I don't think the approach was wrong. I think the calibration was. I don't think there's any doubt the party apparatus cannot relate to regular people. Some of them have chopped wood for the first time today.
Yes these things are hard to judge and no ones instincts are prefect. The truth is not always in one direction. But I think Morris Katz got us DAC (he was the one who introduced Zohran to the “rockstar” candidate in upper Manhattan & Bronx) and he is the one who got us Platner,

The appeal was that PEOPLE WANT CHANGE and Platner represented change. They wanted it when they voted for Obama but didn't get it so then they tried Trump and got...Trump. People are furious with do-nothing Centrists.
