That’s true! And also true of civil rights protestors who adopted nonviolence as a deliberate strategy. Nonviolence doesn’t protect you from state violence—however, this isn’t why people choose it as a strategy. Its purpose is to highlight the violence of the state *by contrast*

the 2024 student encampments on college campuses had movement discipline and the state still beat them, tear gassed them, expelled them, and in some cases deported them

A lot of ppl have not clearly read anything from King other than sharing memes and snippets from Birmingham Jail w/o context. Bernie makes his statement and then accounts share photos of cops arresting him as a young man as if that wasnt the entire point of nonviolence strategy.
BTW there are many objections to the nonviolence strategy. King was criticized by other SCLC folks, perhaps rightly so, for doing the Children's Crusade knowing those cops would beat kids. Not everything has to be modeled like King's nonviolence.
Even overseas — Ghandi’s entire thing was “we will politely walk up in waves and have the Brits bludgeon us to bloody bits”.
