The second quotation (a real quotation in "Abundance") is so funny compared to the Abundance Discourse.

Quick example - here's a section about building rail. The argument is not "we need to deregulate railroads"; it's "we need to build state capacity by building in-house expertise instead of hiring consultants."

Ezraโ€™s solution: Letโ€™s give more money to private real estate and make it harder to relegate their building practices on top rolling back the regulations we already have! The rich and powerful just need a little more money and theyโ€™ll cleanse the sins of capitalism for humanity!
Ezra is ever on the left. Far easier to say "hey, the profit incentive is often not enough to encourage R&D because expected profits are too low. The govt should do some spending on high risk R&D". But nope, we gotta talk about Marx...still
Putting aside the issue of Marxโ€™s claims being positive v normative, Iโ€™m sorta confused by this meme because the implications of the two views are very different so it doesnโ€™t seem all together surprising to me that the reactions to them might differ?
These are antithetical positions in the sense Marx did not believe in the value-add of technology: he saw technological development as an outcome of capital accumulation, while Schumpeter argued for the effect of individual entrepreneurs
My quibble is that Marx was flat out wrong regardless of the quote. Doesn't mean Abundance doesn't have some good policy outcomes.

Ah yes Marx too would love shitting on anti-monopolists and would shake his head at the thought of OSHA and its icky rules.
Nothing in abundance compels the power of the masses. It does it's best to avoid villain narratives, and disperses blame in meek ways. It's completely devoid of an understanding of power. This shit would be beaten and executed in an alleyway by right-wing populism.
It would be odd to point to the sins of capitalism and then claim the solution to said sins of capitalism is to get rid of fetters on capitalism, which seems to be what the quote is saying at face value. Seems obvious that it would fail a vibe check.
