Worthwhile article. "Ensuring California kids receive the most effective reading lessons didn't even merit a discussion among Democrats in the face of union opposition."

The @sfchronicle Editorial Board is over it. This whole editorial is 🔥, and the literacy portion is nuclear. “Nearly 60% of our 3rd graders didn’t meet state standards” for ELA. “Meanwhile, poverty-stricken red states such as Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama have surged

The more I learn about unions the more evil I realize they are. They can legally blackmail you into paying them monthly or you lose your job, they oppose any new form of technological progress because it will take some of their jobs, and in a lot of countries they've made it
Education is such an interesting field. Most fields you can point to the key advances in the last couple decades, the most important papers, etc With education the entire debate seems to be centered on why we should ignore those things as a matter of policy
Genuinely don't get why unions would be against phonics. Why? And why only in CA and not in other states, where all teachers also belong to a union?
The "science of reading" is an odd phrase, isn't it? Turns out it's not a generic term here. It seems to be a specific movement that nobody knows anything about. Could be good or bad, but it's not appropriate to assume that it should be "mandated".
Politician's only job is to get reelected, which requires apportionment of groups of voters, like unions and racial groups. Not "making children read good".
This, along with the port automation nonsense, has made it clear it is time for anti-trust laws regulating unions, as well as a ban on public sector unions. Enough. It is not acceptable for special interests to hold the rest of us hostage like this.
The Democrats on the West Coast are so performative, so corrupt, so stupid, and so scummy, they are dragging the entire platform of the party down. East Coast liberals stand for effective policy, West Coast liberals stand for effective virtue signaling.
