About 15 years ago I was in Sweden talking with some very smart, well-informed undergrad students. They knew a lot about America but were completely shocked that we had programs like Medicaid and Medicare. They thought the poor and old in America had to buy private healthcare

Been thinking about this. I think Europeans have a skewed view of America because they primarily hear about it from American leftwing media sources. The American left wants America to be more egalitarian, so they emphasize all the ways it is inegalitrian. That's all Euros hear.

Social welfare spending in the US as % of GDP is roughly in line with the OECD average, iirc. It's not as robust as some, but certainly isn't a barren hell scape.
Pretty soon they'll be right. And the only reason we ever had these programs was the perceived "threat" from the Soviet Union. No other reason
This is incorrect. Germans do not primarily get their news from American leftwing news sources. They get their news from ARD, ZDF, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Dr. Dad is just making stuff up.
