People who are allowed to go by โ€œdoctorโ€: โ€” Actual medical doctors โ€” Dr Dre โ€” Doctor Worm (not a real doctor but he is a real worm) โ€” Dr J โ€” Emmett โ€œDocโ€ Brown (time travel more impressive than finishing med school)

PhDs have exactly as much right to the honorific "doctor" as MDs do. It's cringe to insist on being called it in either case, but it's fully accurate/appropriate in both cases.
this discourse often conflates different issues, such as insisting on being addressed as "Dr." in any situation and using "Dr." in official correspondence
"Medical doctors" should be called physicians. Only PhDs should be called doctor plus these other special cases.
If the professional situation calls for a honorific it should be used instead of Mr. or Ms.; calling somebody โ€œMiss <some_name>โ€ is unfortunately a pretty common way to insult female researchers which should not be normalized. In all other cases sure, itโ€™s cringe.
Please include the following, as these are without question people allowed to go by "Doctor" -Dr Feelgood -Dr Strange -Dr Who -Dr Acula -The Doctor who gave me the news about a bad case of loving you. Thank you
