It’s hard to convey how bafflingly stupid this is, but the article makes an admirable effort.
Maps for visual learners. The reservoirs are in the Tulare subbasin on the southeast edge of the central valley. To get to the south coast where the fires were, water would have to be routed to the aqueduct somehow and then pumped over the Tehachapi Mountains, not just dumped in some nearby fields.
Simple answer is that Trump thinks gravity goes North to South.
He did earlier (few months ago) accuse Canada of withholding water from the US. Almost no rivers flow from Canada into the US.
See! They pointed all their rivers away from us.
I believe the moron thought because they're CALLED the "Army Corps of Engineers" he thinks he ordered the military to do it. He merely ordered it turned on, and it was turned on. Unbelievably stupid.

There’s just so much stupidity in this; SoCal just got drenched with rain, which really made sure the fires were out. There were no fires for which this heroic gesture could be used.
I wouldn’t call it “drenched” but it was enough to make everything less like kindling.
