“But EV batteries only last a few years…” 🤔 The world’s largest independent EV battery study analysed 500,000+ battery health tests across 20 popular EV models. At 50,000km, NONE of the 20 models had a median battery health below 90%. And even as mileage increased, most were still retaining around 90%+ of their original battery capacity. At the highest mileage band tested… Hyundai Ioniq 5 - 97.13% Mercedes EQA - 96.56% Hyundai Kona - 96.27% Audi Q8 - 95.71% BMW i4 - 95.60% Tesla Model Y retained a median over 94%. That’s data from more than HALF A MILLION battery tests across Europe, Asia, Australia and North & South America. EV batteries aren’t lasting 3–5 years. They’re retaining the vast majority of their original capacity after significant mileage. The firm also stated that drivers will see an “initial drop” in SoH over the first few thousand miles, before the curve flattens off. All data points to electric vehicles having the same lifespan as the average ICE vehicle. What are the test conditions? In the Nordics where you might have subzero temperatures for 1-8 months a year (depending on country), I imagine this would degrade batteries much faster. At least with electric bikes, guidance is to take the batteries inside when it's cold.
50,000 km is only a couple years of driving. The question is how that compares to the ~150K miles that an ICE car starts to need significant engine maintenance at.
If the survey were slightly more granular, that lower bound would probably be strongly correlated to LG Chem pouch batteries. Upper bound likely prismatic or cylindrical from CATL or Panasonic.
Age and abuse kills batteries. After ten years, regardless of mileage, most EV batteries are down to around 80% capacity. And since we don't talk about degredation or pack reliability past that point, it's safe to say 10 years is the effective lifespan of most packs.
50,000 km a car is barely broken in with that milage. Until you have 100s of 1000s of 10 + years old cars battery life tests are pointless
The biggest issue with EV batteries is what to do with them when the cars rust out from under them. We’ll have 20 year old EV batteries with 50 percent capacity looking for a new use. Do we reuse as home power? Recycle? Landfill?
At 200,000 miles, good ICE engine is still going strong if maintained well, even after 10 years. Can the same be said for EV?
A Tesla will lose 7% the first couple of years and then stabilize, dropping much more slowly after that, if taken care of (50% time average).
It makes sense when you compare cycle count to a phone. 1000 cycles and you be at around 80%. But that’s near 3 years of 0-100 charging. Personal EVs do one cycle maybe once a week.
Well you see as they wear down, 90% of range anxiety is more range anxiety that at 100%. Not by 10% either I would reckon

My model Y is a bit over 6 years old. Battery is just under 90% range, still good enough to go anywhere we could when it was new. Driving from Raleigh to Atlanta in a few weeks.
What's it like at 250k miles? That's when a gas engine starts wearing out, so it would be an interesting comparison.
I’ve had my Model Y for six years and have about 120,000 miles on it. I did notice a slight drop at the beginning but since then the drop has not been noticeable.
So mine is an outlier and I should just stop complaining?

Dude 50,000 km is still brand new, and you're boasting the battery already lost 10%?
The most modern EV batteries have a mean lifespan of 8 years or 100,000 miles. A new battery is then required, but it is economically irrational to put a $20,000+ new part into an 8 year old car. Therefore, most EVs will be bricked at 8 years.
I’ve had a Tesla Model 3 for almost 6 years. About 160,000 km. I check how far I can go for a given charge. Any battery degeneration is within the noise.
Only a few years? Well, I guess our battery died several year back then. The continued daily driving is simply an illusion.😂😂😂

You understand that 80% is done for? They don't go to 0, you understand that? So when you say they retain 90%, that means only 10% more to go for it to be useless the voltage won't be enough anymore, just like a phone
