I once asked my Japanese teacher how to improve my Japanese listening, and she said “don’t watch dubbed anime; watch it with subtitles.”
I said I didn’t really watch anime, dubbed or subbed. She was deeply confused. “If you don’t watch anime then why are you studying Japanese?
do you think it would be useful for development and soft power to saturate countries like Nigeria, Philippines, India in anglophone media to try to achieve 100% english fluency, luso in Angola, Mozambique etc, french in DRC, Mali, Senegal etc?
Indeed. Dubbing is one of the stupidest things countries do. Kids have their native language in the bag no matter what; why reinforce something that doesn't need reinforcing at the cost of proficiency in the lingua franca? Dubbing also worsens the viewing experience.
The best would be to simply ban Dutch and Scandinavian languages? Two or three generations of occupation shoud do it, no?
