this is one of those extremely online takes that sounds smart and savvy but is actually 100% incorrect. Obama is, by far, the most popular living president. He left office with a 58% approval rating.

A lot of our present discontent is downstream from the fact that Obama broke a lot of people’s hearts. He promised hope and change, didn’t deliver all that much of it, then retreated to a quiet life of opulence and golfing. Ever since we’ve had a politics dominated by cynicism. x.com/TheAtlantic/st…

Obama is a dignified gentleman. Whatever you think of his politics he has always displayed admirable character and is a proper representative of the USA. He should be the most popular ex-President.
These can both be true! He successfully reached moderates which is why he won large majorities and remains popular. But that broke leftist hearts, who had other dreams.
He passed ACA, ended the Iraq war, and navigated the GFC without sinking the US into a depression. That's a very successful presidency with lots of "change".
that he was above water on approval doesn’t address that a lot of people felt very let down by him
So wild that Bush’s lookback rating isn’t in the dumpster. I’d argue he has done significantly more damage than any president since him. And it’s not even close.
I think you’re both correct. There was a lot of let down with Obama’s presidency given the initial promises he made, and I believe this has absolutely contributed to political apathy, but he’s still widely popular despite this. That’s the reality.
Seeing a lot of Obama hate from people on the left. They are all idiots practicing historical revisionism.
I think the bigger issue is the rise of the destructive left who refused to vote for Hillary or Kamala based on some obviously misguided and self destructive principles, leading to two Trump wins. It's mind bogglingly dumb.
Sam, people having a generally positive perspective on an ex president doesn't actually say anything about his effectiveness, do you think that Obama delivered on the hope and change if the literal next act after he left was to put Donald Fucking Trump in the White House?
