Like virtually every piece attacking Schumer, this doesn’t even try to explain how a shutdown would have led to a better outcome. Jones says Dems could have “demanded” a better bill. So? Republicans would be unbothered by the shutdown and unwilling to offer one to end it.

Jones also complains “Maybe worst of all, House Republicans used a procedural measure before final passage of the bill that prevents Congress from having to vote on keeping or getting rid of Donald Trump’s deeply unpopular tariffs.” True but irrelevant — that measure was in the
But it’s typical Mondaire Jones: a vacuous politician who was a progressive when that was fashionable, a moderate (endorsing against Jamaal Bowman!) when that seemed like the way to win a swing district, and always chasing whatever seems like it will get applause.
Consider, too, today we’d be talking about the government shutdown instead of whatever else is in the news. Would that help or hurt Dems?
Is this true in perpetuity? Eventually airports stop functioning - that’s what ended the 2019 shutdown very quickly. I think the real thing that separates folks on this issue is whether one thinks Dems would own this or Trump/Rs would. And tbh no one would remember it in 1.5
What's so hard to understand? Shutdown will be blamed on Republicans, not on Democrats. The shutdown pain will be so strong it will get voters angry and they vote against Reps, for Dems, in 2026. We are not talking quantum physics here. What are you not able to understand ?
Schumer should be replaced regardless of whether or not he made the right call. Even if he did, he certainly didn't handle it well telling Dems he's vote no and then caving. They should be pursuing maximum confrontation. Not trying to cut their losses as the Constitution burns.
If Republicans would be unbothered by a shutdown, why didn't they just let the government shut down? Republicans have the majority in both houses. They could have just not even tried to pass a CR and let the shutdown happen.
"Republicans would be... unwilling to offer one to end it"... which would be incredibly unpopular, and Republicans would be the ones to suffer public opinion. You answered your own question.
I don’t know if the Republicans would be unbothered. As soon as the disruptions start to impact daily life, a lot of immense pressure will come down on the government to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Better outcome only come after necessary pain has been inflicted. If we play out your position, Dems better cave to everything Republicans want on the budget in perpetuity because hey they don’t mind a shutdown. Better yet just end gov’t because hey that’s what Rs want anyway?
No one should ever try anything ever because our Republican Daddies won't allow it.
Channeling anger as opposed to channeling anger aligned with strategy and a somewhat successful endgame.
It's like they WANT a Democrat version of the Tea Party Movement. You know, the very same movement that non-so-indirectly led to the political crisis the US currently finds itself in.
The criticism is NOT about "shutdown", but about him not demanding a clean CR, before it entered House discussion. That was his only leverage, and he gave it away. But, the issue is deeper because he probably knew there are other Dems who would not have agreed.
Prediction: the only thing that saves our country is a brutal recession before the 2026 midterms Such pessimism is not like me, but here we are.
There is a fundamental asymmetry here that favors Rs. They’re willing to pull the trigger and make millions of Americans suffer during a shutdown. Dems just aren’t!
𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐭 The liberal establishment has abandoned their base and emboldened Trump to capture voters who are disillusioned with the status quo. We need to move forward to build a legitimate working class coalition... ★ NEW ARTICLE ⬇️
And Republicans would have continued to receive the blame until they compromised and ended it??? What's not clicking??
I have asked everyone who has been banging on Schumer to name a strategic reason why a shutdown makes more sense other than *it will make me feel good*. Silence. The Democrats are fucking hand wringing children.
