More footage of some genius who managed to get this upgrade working
I have nothing to promote but I beg
IF YOU ARE BUYING THE MAC MINI PLEASE GET IT DISCOUNTED THROUGH THE APPLE EDUCATION STORE
okthxbye
It may be removable but it wonโt be user replaceable.
I donโt know why youโre posting this with CAPS LOCK on, it makes no difference to the user.
Maybe if you scrolled through the thread and looked at what I posted instead of trying to get a snarky tweet in, youโd see that itโs replaceable by basically anyone who knows how to use a screwdriver.
The upgrade works, just shut up if youโve got nothing nice to say lol
Hereโs a teardown showing it!

@ohgkg
Partial teardown of M4 Mac Mini /w 16GB RAM & 256GB SSD. Interesting revealation: Wifi chip & antenna on the back of bottom air intake. SSD on a daughter board. And even the base 256GB version comes in two chips. No compromise in speed. Theoretically also end user upgradable.

Iโm going to buy an M4 Pro Mac mini later this month but NO
That would void my warranty lol

Thanks to my friend Enzo who sent me the iFixit forum thread that I got this all from this morning.
His Reddit post about it is linked below
How many bullets does that magazine hold, and what do I do when it runs out?
Update, UPGRADES DO INDEED WORK!!!
iFixit did some testing and claims that replacing the SSD with a larger one from another Mac mini works 100% fine as long as you have another Mac that you can restore the SSD with through Apple Configurator.
Source:
Not really "SSD", but Apple-custom NANDs. The nvme controller is in M4 itself.
Yeah I didnโt call it an SSD but just โinternal storageโ for this reason.
They are just basically NAND boards.
Correct, SoC has the actual storage controller chip so these are not SSDs, just NANDs.
That is *quite literally* NOT the WiFi Card.
THIS is **quite literally** the WiFi Card. Get your facts straight before trying to school other people lol
C:
Yes, it can be replaced with another drive from another mini and all you need to make it work is Apple Configurator.
This is actually the most NPC response to this tweet I have ever seen because itโs a quarter of all replies, itโs completely mindless and not funny.
Yes the entire world knows โnormalโ PCs are essentially big lego sets that you can do whatever you want with.
I have one, thanks.
Whaaaat! Seriously

Please give more deets, can we replace it? Where do we buy he SSD, Amazon? Links please!
This is crazy!!! More info please
The thingโs barely out so no not right now, there will probably be third party drives made at some point but knowing Apple youโll need another Mac and Apple Configurator to make it work.
This is like the third time someoneโs made this joke already
Cmon guys you got better jokes than that surely?

Why is this such a big deal for Apple fans? PCs already have this feature, but Apple knows their customers will buy anything they release. Itโs like a status symbolโAppleโs products practically become a part of their identity.
No itโs called buying the thing that works best for you.
I have had a better experience with video production working on Macs and I prefer Final Cut Pro which is a Mac exclusive.
Asking rhetorical questions you know the answer to doesnโt make you an intellectual lol
It has already been replaced successfully lol
Also nice assumption that Iโm an โApple Fanboyโ just because I expressed excitement for the removable module.
I used the word removable for a reason because there wasnโt news out yet at the time on whether it could be replaced.
It will have a secondary chip that hardware locks it to the mac, just so you cannot replace it yourself
Maybe scroll through the thread instead of assuming things and look at the clips I linked lol
It isnโt like that at all.
Curious! What about the chip, think it was called t2 or something, which prevented the replacement of certain parts from non apple users? It's been a long time since my last time caring about this kind of stuff!

But when you remove this and add, letโs say a compatible version
Is the performance the same? I can assume it wonโt be right? Wondering whether to upgrade or not from the m2 mini. Need to add more screens to my set up. Was looking at this for the new upgrade
I won't be doing an internal storage swap, but I have been debating on picking one up! Gonna go take a look at it this weekend
Wait, so you dont need to pay $194852347 for 8tb, you can buy 512gb and swap it?
This is good to know. I can plan on upgrading the RAM when buying it knowing I can upgrade the SSD laterโฆ
Is there anyway to get at the ram or is that impossible
President Trump just survived ANOTHER assassination attempt.
I was waiting for pics of the internals to confirm this before I spent an extra $1,000 on 512GB
It's not a proprietary drive format anymore? I vaguely remember a LTT video where he tried to do this and the drive was locked to the MB somehow.
It doesnโt look like a standard SSD though. Question is is anyone going to make upgrades.
Yo, is the new king of aramid fiber (600d) cases. They're super thin, have Magsafe, and come with a free tempered glass screen protector. I love it, even though it's an #ad. thinborne.com
This is good news and bad at the same time. Good news is we can, bad news is if Apple serialized the drive to the board, I do know you can do a DFU restore on Mac Studio with an original storage drive but it may not pull based on software limitations forced by Apple. They

do you think there is some kind of hardware drm that would stop 3rd parties from making their own drive upgrades?
They'll be device ID lock to the computer just like if you desotter the current ones
Here's a video that goes through the process in detail:
If it is the same style as in the Mac Studio (which knowing Apple is a big IF) it is a proprietary NAND, and in time, I imagine it will get reverse engineered just like the Studio in the coming months.
