I spent so many years of my life furiously denouncing Obama’s “deportation to keep anti-immigrant sentiment at bay” strategy, cheered when Biden didn’t try to mollify public sentiment, and…yeah. Fuck me

It sucks that the Biden catastrophe vindicated basically every annoying Obama decision.

It’s almost like the Black law professor w a Muslim name who won two presidential elections in his 40s knows something about politics.
Yep, cost the popular vote and the supreme court for an entire generation. Most of the GOP really aren't for mass deportations (George W. tried it some and got pushback from ag governors), but the American people want some kind of immigration control.
As a formerly pro-immigration conservative: you lost people with the subsidized apartments and prepaid debit cards. I think most people were fine with immigrants in 2020 (and polls showed this), but asylum seekers were given preferential treatment over struggling Americans.
The “Obama sucked, let’s not do what he did” sentiment on the left the last ten years turned out to be very misguided. Maybe the man knew what he was doing!
And yet in 2016 Trump ran on an anti-immigrant platform and Obama’s strategy to pass immigration reform failed Biden’s mistake was to accept the idea that unlimited asylum seeking was a legitimate use of the system
Ironically, Obama's softening on immigration after the midterms to mollify immigration activists also contributed to the xenophobic backlash that propelled Trump to power.

*keep the border secure, let in the people who come through official ports of entry and send back the ones who don't* doesn't seem like a controversial idea to me but somehow it is.
There was also more nuance to his policy where they focused on criminals and people who recently crossed the border. And I remember the logic being, well if we enforce existing law, the hawks will do CIR. Almost worked but for Jefferson Beauregard Sessions
I'm to the right of the Democratic party on 80% of issues, and to the left on immigration. This is the one issue I wish Dems could hold their ground on, and I have to accept that they can't. Sigh.
The only real left take on reducing immigration backlash I've seen is to help the economies south of us so there's fewer refugees. Which is great, a lot of bang for our buck, but helping every place in the world so an unlimited number of refugees don't arrive is unrealistic.
A lot of folks rejected Obama over the past several years… all of them look pretty bad now (not that he didn’t make mistakes).
I don't think it was ever to silence the anti-immigration folks. It was because our immigration system is broken and dated, and nothing is changing without passing reform.
We need to keep growing and immigration is vital to our sustained growth. We're about to touch the stove and we need to make sure we learn the right lesson (far easier legal immigration + do the work to gracefully absorb (ie affordably house) new Americans).
How many thousands of times do we all make the mistake that our beliefs and priorities are the majority beliefs and priorities
To prove Obama right, it's not sufficient to prove anti-immigrant sentiment exists. One needs to prove that AND that his cruelty kept anti-immigrant sentiment at bay. 2016 was a resounding falsification of the latter
probably the most popular thing Obama ever did that may have single-handedly won him reelection was sending super soldiers to shoot bin Laden in the face. Never forget how much that helped him when reelection.
What could Biden have done to overcome the perception that he is Biden? Ie loyal dog of the machine, clearly no threat to do anything except sniff hair. Him and Harris are wearing someone else’s defeat
It's genuinely saddening to see how anti-immigrant the discourse is. Especially because the US lacks the terrorist attacks that made Europe fret and gave it an explanation. The current discourse just seems like it wants a scrapegoat.
The thing is, Presidents swear to uphold the law. Not try to get around it, which is what was necessary in order to allow what late term Obama and then Joe Biden allowed.
nah, Democrats got no juice because their domestic politics gets 100% clobbered by Trump-land's more powerful story of international stuff: namely, China and immigrants and so America will never be on top again. you could say "we're not gonna be an empire any more" and...
No, fuck the few idiotic voters so lacking in integrity they voted for a criminal because of inflation 2 years ago or because some other people get to live in America. THEY are the selfish idiots who are wrong. They’re the ones that need to to do some soul searching
The most popular and successful Democratic President in decades, and once he left the left of center was taken over by people who rejected him and all his works. How'd that happen?
