A new Glaeser and Gyourko paper on productivity in the construction sector just came out. It suggests that a lot of the sector's productivity problems are down to land use regulations. Their case includes a lot of graphs, like this:

They also have graphs on quite direct measures of land use regulation, showing that it is surprisingly new. In California, it emerged largely after the heyday of suburban 'Americana' that people look back to.
