I firmly believe that all people should be free of hunger, but if anything ever tested that belief it’s the discovery that someone would spend two hours to save $2 and that an *even dumber* person would deem that stupidity newsworthy.
Don't miss the president of NBC News talking about how she pushed bogus sensationalist coverage about inflation to convince the public they were in economic misery

The enduring power of inflation on politics: Even as unemployment rates were at historic lows and inflation subsided, many voters simply do not share a sense of optimism - given the high prices of groceries, housing, higher education and healthcare. That profoundly affected the presidential race this year. One of the most memorable segments we did was about how people in Nebraska often drive two hours roundtrip to a bakery in Omaha to save two dollars a loaf on bread. The lesson is that polls are just one tool - and that it is essential that journalists stay close to voters across geographically diverse areas.

Spend two hours *and* how much gas
People taking fewer trips and driving 2 hours to a Costco / Sam’s Club because of inflation? Maybe? People driving 2 hours *to a bakery* to save $2? Someone is messing with you.
God forbid they ask a follow up. What a useless reporter
The drive isn't inherently crazy. It's a factory outlet setup with super steep discounts. If you have the freezer space or other people to go in with you to buy in bulk, and you do it as part of an occasional larger day out, it can absolutely be worth the time and effort.
That said, you're absolutely right. Believing it's a real inflation-fighting strategy or that it's reflective of anything larger is absolutely ridiculous.
$2 *per loaf* to be fair. If you buy in bulk and freeze it, it could be worth it for some?
How much shitty bread are people freezing for later??
Stupidity of that magnitude from regular people seems...arguably newsworthy. Or at least worth study.
