DC substituted traffic cameras for policing issuing tickets, which seems like a good idea to me, but the ATE tickets come with weaker consequences and those consequences aren’t enforced so traffic violence keeps getting worse.

This is an important point. We should have enhanced policing with ATE tickets. On the DC Major Crash Task Force, I pushed for the police to pull over cars that had illegal license plate covers on...
Interesting but not surprising that the less "speedy" tickets are more often paid.
this article says that in DC drivers have racked up more than $1B in unpaid tickets. Is data from Denmark public on this? I suspect that number is nearer to zero and the DC metro area and DK populations are similar. Can you find real data?
