I have real reservations about this claim. Starshield is bound by mountains of terms of service between the Pentagon on SpaceX. The idea that Musk just pulled and Office Space in Starlink HQ and told the watch worker to put up a speed gate on terminals around Ukraine sounds like a massive problem for the Pentagon as well as Ukraine. So yeah, I have real questions here.

Musk ordered the slowdown of a military-grade version of Starlink relied on by Ukraine, a decision that sparked panic in Kyiv and confusion inside the Trump administration - US officials to the WSJ

Basically, this would mean DoW has no control over its proprietary critical communications networks that it is paying mountains of money for. Literally a gigantic strategic issue that would undermine future investment in Starshield.
"so yeah, let's just turn down the velocity for connection around the Donbas, that would be grreeat. Thaannks."

Do you think the WSJ lied an put this out there? I doubt it. Do I believe that Elon acted alone, no, and they don't suggest that either.

If you don’t think Musk engineered a backdoor into his own tech, you’re naive. And it’s obvious the throttling play was made with Trump’s blessing. So the Musk/Trump decision may have hatched in the oval, but the execution happened under Musk’s command.
I’ll be blunt after nearly 40 years as a defense contractor… there is exactly zero chance that DoW allows the contractor to exercise that degree of control over such a vital defense system.
That's what makes Hegseth's answer today so odd: he said they hadn't issued any directives, but Starlink could make decisions under its terms of service. Does the Pentagon's contract actually leave SpaceX that discretion?
i feel like every piece of media i’ve seen on this has been mired in confusion of the distinction between Starlink and Starshield
I agree it would be a massive violation of contract terms. I disagree that that automatically make it unlikely to have occurred. I don’t know any more than anyone else consuming public reporting but I find it both technically plausible and believable.
Fair question. Musk says the military and the president decide Starshield limits, Hegseth says the Pentagon made no directives, and the contract terms aren't public.

Who slowed Ukraine's Starlink? Three reports that don't fully line up, and nobody's confirmed any of them on the record. WSJ reports Elon Musk ordered it, citing U.S. officials and people familiar with the matter. Reuters, citing three officials last week, said the order came

If you wish to learn about the mobility speed restrictions applicable to commercial terminals, please search for the 100 mph movement speed limit that Starlink has enforced worldwide since the beginning of this year, as well as the whitelist-based mobility speed restrictions
Sounds like the usual horseshit from official sources they can’t bother to name. I don’t see Elon telling the military how to use its hardware. I also don’t see Ukraine getting unfettered access to US military equipment. Much like gps, himars, F-16’s or any other system, it
Its very obvious from the very fact that every single time this is reported about, everyone is conflating Starlink with Starshield. That's the dead giveaway. They are entirely different services with different terms of service. The ENTIRE POINT of Starshield was so Starlink could

Rubio said Starshield is not in Ukraine though. If I had to guess what was going on here or most of the starlinks in Ukraine are simply regular Starlink being paid through contracts with Poland, Germany, etc And maybe there had been an off the books understanding that these
Both Trump and Elon denied it. And if it was a speed limit, why so erratic? Reports claim that it was intermittent and variable. Some units had no problems at all.
Musk, Trump and company don’t want Ukraine to win - they’re protecting their own interests.
There is a lot of misinformation. Rubio claimed they don’t have starshield, so, if it’s Starlink, and they lowered the max speed of a Starlink terminal in Ukraine, that’s a different governance then starshield. Again, these are what I wallets call at best, claims.
It's almost like it's complete bullshit, ie. some naive WSJ reporter got played by admin officials trying to downplay their role after the backlash.
That’s what Elon probably used as an excuse to slow it down, some violation of tos.
I think they are letting him take the heat for a few weeks and he's playing along. Everyone knows the truth will come out after the mid terms because this administration has more leaks than a porcupine's raincoat.
ive seen this circulating the past hour or so, but no link to an actual WSJ article, seems like last weeks garage being recirculated, that was already addressed with the distinction made between starlink and starshield.

It is not a credible report. Can anyone verify which serve Ukraine is using? Musk throttling DoD service is no different than Claude doing it. More likely, UKR was using commercial service for high velocity offensive missions. So Musk curtailed high velocity platforms using the
It's possible that he did ask for it, but the actual workers would still abide by existing laws, contracts, and stuff like that.
This makes no sense. They are using this in orbit which is must faster than that. For the commercial version, maybe, though small aircraft can go faster.
