RFK Jr. for HHS reminds me of Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers for SCOTUS. Democrats get this choice: Approve someone totally unqualified (and, in RFK's case, obsessed with some very bad ideas) or see them replaced by a more qualified, probably more effective, rightwing ideologue. HHS, for instance, has a lot of reach into reproductive rights. RFK is pro-choice. In the end, it's the pro-life groups I expect will try to sink this nomination.

This is the argument I’m making about Matt Gaetz. I think RFK is different because his “obsessions” will lead to lead to unvaccinated children dying.
I suspect hospital and issuance lobbyists are also keen to sink his nomination, given past support for Medicare for All. He can’t make single-payer happen, but he could make life hell for the Medicare Advantage profiteers, etc.
The problem isn't the policies, per se. The problem is the exodus from FDA, NIH, CDC, etc. That's going to be a lot of experience walking out the door.
“RFK is pro-choice.” Yet he supported the anti-choice candidate over the pro-choice one, for a promise of power. Do you think he actually has principles he won’t sell for personal advancement?
Bork was the other case that came to my mind. I have had the "was it better to get scalia over Bork for the left" conversation many times. The gist seems to be, scalia was worse for the left because he is affable and his opinions could be quite engaging in what is one of the...
Miers was not a lunatic, whose ideas lead to the needless deaths of following a measles outbreak. Miers also did not have a brain worm & did not stage an accident with a bear in Central Park.
With RFK, there's a high likelihood that this fairly quickly blows up in their face in a visible and embarrassing way. The morons who thought eggs cost $8 and voted for Trump are going to see "I can't find a doctor anymore and the supplements I bought killed grandma"
80% of what RFK says is critically important and should be broadly supported — eg his primary focus is on destroying corporate capture of our regulatory bodies Most of his positions are the positions of European countries. Fluoride in the water? Europe doesn’t do that
Nothing like the ‘strategic’ move of appointing someone wildly unqualified so the alternative looks even worse. It's like asking if you'd rather have a broken clock or no clock at all—and somehow, we're supposed to feel grateful?
Doubling down on being wrong after a humiliating defeat. They won’t learn anything for years
I share your assessment. I'm no fan of RFK Jr. & his stance on vaccines, but on other issues, inc. abortion, he's still a Democrat & preferable to a standard GOP. And states mostly set vaccine mandates anyway.
This is the part where GOP owners🤺.The long standing Project2025 Catho/Christo Fascists vs dark triad tech fascists.United to destroy democracy, but both groups are highly narcissistic. Both wanting power w/different visions of fascism. The religious fascist expected Roger Severino

He's also for universal healthcare. Specifically for Medicare 4 All. I don't think M4A is the right approach for what are essentially IT reasons but on balance I am not really opposed to him. States set vaccination policy for example.
I noticed something during the elections. Many look to politicians as if they’re our saviors, letting hope rise or fall based on who’s in the White House. Yes, policies and ideologies matter, and our country is truly remarkable. But even so, it pales next to our eternal home. If

Eff off - you guys have been triangulating their crap for decades which is a large part of the reason we are here in this hell of horrible choices with Trump.
I want Trump’s appointments to be as bad as possible, as fast as possible. It’s the only chance we have to wake people up to the danger he presents while we still have the freedom to do anything to stop it.
Why can't 2 nominees b rejected, or 3,.. When u run a campaign demeaning DEI hires- which might have validity- & then nominate clearly incompetent& inexperienced people, handing out favors like a mobster, it raises questions about whether or not ur just a bullshitter.
sure bro sure...

Congratulations to @RobertKennedyJr! We look forward to his leadership in addressing the broken @CDCgov, @US_FDA, and @NIH. We are grateful to RFK Jr. for speaking out on the importance of transparency regarding vaccines, and are hopeful that true scientific debate can be x.com/realDonaldTrum…

RFK Jr. and Miers are nothing alike. Miers is highly respected for her jurisprudence. The Ivy elitists just didn’t like her because she went to SMU, a damn good law school that teaches students how to actually practice law. RFK Jr has no qualifications for his appointment.
HHS controls trillions in research funding for basic science that RFK wants to eliminate. It would absolutely be worth it to put in a right wing freak who at least understands that science funding is important to national self interest over this monkey who wants to burn it down
I know you are sure this is a clever analysis but the choices are not strategic. They are an expression of his view of power which is impulsive and involves personal connections based on loyalty and obedience. No one is chosen strategically and no replacement will be either.
RFK’s policies will probably end up maiming and killing a whole bunch of kids, seems irresponsible to not put up a fight
Make polio great again! Church bells rang nationwide when Salk’s polio vaccine was shown to be safe & effective in the 1950s. The vaccine effectively eliminated polio in the US. No more paralyzed kids. Reminds me of a quote: those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Why would you think RFK has underlying ethical drives thst he wouldn't just reject in favor of self-interest and an obsession with anti-vax advocacy? It's also possible another nominee might actually consider factors like social determinants of health as critical points of focus.
Harriet Miers was the White House counsel and an experienced commercial litigator. RFK is an environmental lawyer and crank with no public health background. Would you really be drawing the comparison if Harriet Miers were Harry Miers?
Yeah lets let a bunch of kids die in measles outbreaks so we can engage in some fantastical 4D-chess.
Many offices of the Dept of Education will likely be transferred to HHS as part of the "dismantling" of the Dept of Ed, offices that are key for Trump's efforts to promote "patriotic education" in Democratic strongholds. That should factor into Democrats' calculations too
Harriet was a former heroin addict with brain worms who had no prior work experience related to the post they were nominated for?
I don't think Trump is being that strategic. I think he's appointing the least qualified friend he can find for two reasons: loyalty and control. He wants to burn it all down.
