Teaching has a pay scale that is very biased towards rewarding older workers because thats what unions negotiate. They also negotiate automatic pay bumps for advanced degree credits, which results in rewarding for a lot of useless credits that don't make better teachers

1. There are two different things. Teachers get automatic pay bumps (rows) most years. Not every year, though. Lots of stalls where the teacher is expected to get more education to move along the column instead of the row. 2.Teachers get pay bumps--not automatic--for *any* post
Overtime for firefighters and cops is often a scam too! Prob better to just lift base pay than waste it on the fake credentialism.
Going to an expensive college and getting an expensive Master’s Degree does not get you better pay or make you a better teacher. This not new information.
Shoulda done some research beforehand. But also in 10 years, if she sticks with it, her student debt will be forgiven and she will be on the higher end of that pay scale and will be basically unfireable regardless of her performance… not a bad deal for some people.
Have schools experimented with not backloading pay to attract talent? It seems like a relic of a time when more people expected to spend their entire career with one employer.
Isn't all that true in union free states too though? Unions likely bias it by a ton and they obviously effect non-union states but I feel doubtful there the whole explanation.
is $48,000 bad, though? I'm tired of pretending teachers don't have cozy jobs, short hours and low expectations. And don't start me on how they let chatgpt do all their work.
Writing a paper on Piaget for an advanced degree did not make my literally-best-in-the-world MIL a better kindergarten teacher. Though as SIL I was just smart enough to know not to say that.
“Very biased” toward older teachers = on average a pathetic 1.5% pay bump for each additional YoS Teacher pay just sucks across the board, and we wonder why the profession attracts so many unimpressive people
More importantly, teacher pay scales are public information. She could have looked up her potential salary before making all of these decisions.
