WSJ: "More than $1 billion worth of beverage cans were dumped in U.S. landfills just last year, the trade group estimates. By weight, that was similar to all the primary aluminum produced by U.S. smelters."

Turns out this goes back to trade war with China. US doesn’t have capacity to process all the aluminum cans. x.com/alecmacgillis/…

Well for one…when GOP states started to outlaw aluminum can redemptions to punish the homeless…it makes a big difference in recycling overall Stupid public policy
I live in a state with a deposit on beverage cans, so more of them get recycled here than elsewhere. But the deposit hasn't changed while the beverage *inside* the can has more than tripled in price. Collecting & redeeming cans feels less worthwhile than it did in the '90s.
If there's truly a shortage it should be reflected in the price of cans. I suspect the cost of recovery is higher than value of used cans though.
Are you sure they are still made out of aluminum? In Europe they are definitely not. Almost since the same time the curve tanks.
Since the rest of recycling of people's trash is self-evident BS, I recycle nothing at all. It all goes in the trash. If we JUST had can recycling, I'd probably do it, but I have no desire to house a 96 gallon bin for my few cans (that bears will get into).

1) They're worried. 2) This is nonsense. An illegal act is illegal, regardless of the money it brings in. (Though maybe this issue affects refunds.)
