A friend wants to strip mine the landfills. He claims the metal content is higher than in many ores.
Well for one…when GOP states started to outlaw aluminum can redemptions to punish the homeless…it makes a big difference in recycling overall
Stupid public policy
I live in a state with a deposit on beverage cans, so more of them get recycled here than elsewhere. But the deposit hasn't changed while the beverage *inside* the can has more than tripled in price. Collecting & redeeming cans feels less worthwhile than it did in the '90s.
“Anthony reassured me that what I was seeing could easily be fixed and we walked through the mechanics of what we could do...So stoked to have people knowledgeable about the specific trades I am working with and have solutions when things go against your trade plan.”
Yes, and remelting recycled cans takes 5% of the energy of producing primary aluminum from smelting.
If there's truly a shortage it should be reflected in the price of cans.
I suspect the cost of recovery is higher than value of used cans though.
Perhaps if recyclers paid me rather than vice versa, I would happily give them my cans. Municipal recycling is a racket
Are you sure they are still made out of aluminum? In Europe they are definitely not. Almost since the same time the curve tanks.
Since the rest of recycling of people's trash is self-evident BS, I recycle nothing at all. It all goes in the trash. If we JUST had can recycling, I'd probably do it, but I have no desire to house a 96 gallon bin for my few cans (that bears will get into).
Wow, that's a crazy stat—$1B in cans just tossed? , imagine if we could recycle even half of that. Big opportunity for aluminum reuse!

the total collapse of civil society in the face of an unpopular, authoritarian, and senile president (who only won 49.9% of the vote in the first place) is one of the most pathetic things I’ve ever seen
