Libertarian here. The problem was never research but the money drain in front of it (NGOs with a questionable definition of N). If the money actually went to research the world as we know it would be totally different.
There should be free market incentives that contribute to research, our government should fund 0% of it.
The right wing has a point though, you can look up the grants and see its stuff like “Psychedelic mushroom enzymes and their effect on homosexual orgies, a LONGitudinal case study featuring men of color and gingers”

Yes, tax payers should definitely be giving billions of dollars to multi billion dollar companies, who charge us as much as they can, for the drugs we paid to develop, then our government gave to them to sell to us.

No one complains about a pharmaceutical company doing research. The problem is tax payers footing the bill for research that private industry then profits from.
Ozempic is being sued for 2 billion! I don't know how much research cost on the "magic lizard saliva" but it is going to cost a lot more
