They've addressed this repeatedly, many of the platforms are too old to handle the weight of all that steel and glass without potentially degrading and posing a hazard They'd need to shut down stations to completely rebuild the platforms to do this safely at many stations

I mean, they also claim they can't dig because there's "too much history" to dig up (which the Brits laugh at ofc)
True. They've also got twice the GDP, though, so seems incredibly within reach.
The tube also doesn’t have this. The new stations do but the majority of them don’t have them.
Note that Tokyo actually has two subway networks; one with 179 stations, the other with 106 stations. This puts the city total into 7th instead of 10th place.
Wouldn't this mean they'd have more reudancy, so you can shut down stations to do extrnsive modernization without seriously harming transit?
So what? You expect them to all do it at once? It’s so black and white with some people. You realize you can implement this with busy and crowded stations and work your way up over years and years right?
