I win again! Newly-released Swedish data shows that the rise in autism between 2001 and 2020 was... ENTIRELY attributable to an increase in cases WITHOUT intellectual disability—less severe cases than used to be the norm! The autism epidemic is not real: we just diagnose more.

You’re implying a continuum. But I’m not convinced the new, mild cases have anything etiologically in common with classic severe autism. Do they run in the same families? Wouldn’t be hard to determine if one started with severe (rare) probands.

w. respect: data shows rise in diagnoses is confined to cases w/o intellectual disability. Informative, but *does not entail* underlying incidence is static. Why? bc increase in true rates of mild autism can co-occur w enlarged diagnostics; ie the 2 ≠ mutually exclusive.

As the article notes, when the same thing was observed in the U.S., we later got enough data to determine that the entire rise of any sort was due solely to diagnostic drift. We have similar data for Sweden. We're confident there's no real rise for many reasons, this just adds.

What is an intellectual disability? Be specific. It is sometimes development half their age when autism can show up in some pretty obvious ways like needing to wear headphones, not making eye contact, PDA/ODD. There are pretty noticeable signs when they are still functional.

What happened to holding kids back? Parents through it would be too traumatic. Given the options of holding them back or a diagnosis, they picked the latter. As an ASD kid that was held back in 2nd grade, I developed coping skills from that trauma and it made me successful

Can I get you on board with my idea: 1) Autism-lite and significant intelligence have close to a 1:1 correlation. 2) The inclusion of Autism-lite on the spectrum with non-verbal autism was a deliberate move to help normies discount observations made by more intelligent people.

My child has a pretty “severe” case in the sense that she’s nonverbal and has frequent meltdowns, yet she isn’t diagnosed with an intellectual disability. So perhaps there are more cases like hers as well as more mild diagnoses?

💰When I worked in this industry not long ago, insurance companies paid out $125 per hour for services. Google says now it’s upwards of $200/hour for services. Most kids qualify for 20 hours per week but some qualify for more. A child qualifying for just 20 hours at $125/hour

We knew this and unfortunately this means that autism has differentiated into two new disorders. Autism has always been accompanied with intellectual disability and that should remain the norm. A combination of ADHD and anxiety does not need an umbrella term, it can remain as two

Being recategorized from aspergers to autism has been frustrating, since half of the supports are meant for profoundly non-functional people, not people who just have challenges with social function.

I’ve been saying this for years. I knew kids diagnosed WITHOUT language difficulties or sensory issues. One kid threw a backpack in kindergarten that was all. I also know many non verbal and moderate impaired. It’s hard on them to get treatment competing with the above kids.

Given that over-diagnosis could also be done within the intellectually disabled population, I’m kind of surprised we don’t see that.

You lose. Intellectual disability is not a diagnostic criteria for ASD. The rise in diagnosis without intellectual disability is consistent with the DSM. Unfortunately, your opinion on what qualifies as “real” ASD is not relevant. You lose. Again.

I'm a physician and my niece is one such case. Diagnosed with autism, weird kid but makes eye contact, likes being the center of attention. Seen a lot of autistic people in medicine and she ain't one

I also wouldn’t be surprised if there is a genuine increase in mild autistic symptoms simply due to the internet/technology increasing isolation and therefore social skills.

Very true. Anyone can prove this for themselves by simply comparing the DSM-3 vs DSM-5 criteria for autism. In the 60s, autistic children were largely nonverbal, and sat in a corner rocking back and forth all day. Now one can get the diagnosis without any social deficit at all.

Autism risk is also known to be associated with the ages of both parents. It'd be interested to see this breakdown from your analysis, and whether it helps explain the less severe cases

Breaking down the stupid rule that one cannot have adhd and autism at the same time must’ve been a big factor. Going on stimmies for adhd also reveals autistic traits for the first time for many people as well.
