Tucker used to be a good writer a long, long time ago before he got suckered in by the insanity.
To me he's just a super-cynical careerist who read the right wing zeitgeist and played it for all it was worth. But yes, good writing and decent journalism are way back in his past and they still show up every once in a great while.
Sadly, there is a "facts in our face reality" that Iran is a problem regardless of its population, etc. (Though these things are easy to look up... ah hem...) On the other hand, "regime change" and "nation building/adjusting" require much nuance than seems at hand...
It's more than just Cruz not knowing the population (even just an estimate) and not knowing the ethnic demographics. It's also that he isn't even sure who is at war and what the US role is. Carlson in 3 questions exposed Cruz as a total grandstander.
Honoring the Memory of Steven Sotloff, of Blessed Memory
Today, we remember Steven Sotloff, a courageous Jewish journalist whose life was tragically taken by ISIS a decade ago. His bravery and dedication to truth continue to inspire us.
The greatest tribute we can offer is to
Badness is spoiled goodness. He's basically a Sith who could be an amazing Jedi though that won't realistically happen
That's a good analogy. And every once in awhile, he's still willing to turn on the emperor.
It’s a honestly a tragedy. Good journalism is rare these days especially on the right.
Tucker in a former life was a borderline brilliant writer at Weekly Standard.
Probably true. I don’t know what’s worse though. Saying and doing the things he does because he’s a craven careerist, or because he’s simply a moron (inclined to think the former is true)
Good journalism is freaking out when your interviewee doesn't know the fun fact you just looked up?
"Elmore Leonard meets Nabokov, Michael Crichton meets Vonnegut, Carl Hiaasen meets Joseph Heller. And it has what is probably the best gunfight in literary history."
He's a very smart guy and was a great magazine writer before. Sad that his talents are being put to use for such evil.
This is stopped clock syndrome; once in a very great while, Tucker can end up on the right side of an issue (to wit, “let’s not go to war with Iran, guys”), and he is capable once he’s there.
Always found him and Hunter S. Thompson’s friendship strange. Perhaps Thompson could see something even Tucker couldn’t.
He has good anti war takes I don’t think that absolves him from all the atrocities he’s put into the universe but it’s also ok to say he has good anti war takes
The Kaus censor doesn’t impress me here: I doubt Carlson knows much more than Cruz gave (and I’ll bet he knows squat about the B’haih persecution or has read a single HRW report on Iran). Worse, he probably knows the Rafsanjani threat but won’t put it in the table.
Well said. I'll never forget Tucker's (who was still on Fox at the time) scathing monologue criticizing, from the RIGHT, Trump's weak response to the riots in June 2020. It felt like such an inflection point for that whole election cycle.
His early career is rlly intersting and full of like actual journalism, he is a good reporter who is also just insanely evil
He is a good journalist, and hearing from people who know him personally, a genuinely good human being.
He's also completely wack.
It’s real time accountability for words and positions and we haven’t seen that in quite some time.
Intelligence is important, but it is overrated as the only road to excellence.
Assuming "Showing Up" is luck & presence, I would add "Hard Work", and "Good Mentorship" to the ingredients in the right-side figure.

There is a difference between good at journalism and being a good journalist. Integrity is one of those differences, and Tucker abandoned his.
I don’t think so, I think he’s just a smart guy who knows how to use his intelligence to get what he wants.
Despite being completely correct in this clip, I think it has more to do with playing nice with Russia and his dissident right audience that’s big into anti-war atm.
