Behold the ridiculousness of the Jones Act: American natural gas has to be shipped to Spain before being shipped to Puerto Rico because sending it directly is not legal. It would be funny if it weren’t impoverishing Americans.

The tanker RIBERA DUERO KNUTSEN is currently transporting LNG from Spain (no doubt transshipped as Spain doesn't produce natgas) to Puerto Rico vesselfinder.com/vessels/detail Puerto Rico cannot source LNG from the U.S. mainland as there are no JA-compliant ships to transport it.

Or maybe the JA compliant ships are so expensive to create and operate that this is actually cheaper. It seems improbable no one in the industry has ever noticed this before.
It’s supposed to keep up a domestic commercial fleet to be used during times of war, but its failed miserably at that.
I worked with a public health organization that has a partner clinic in Puerto Rico. After Hurricane Maria, we found a generator supplier in DR but they weren't allowed to ship directly to PR due to the Jones Act. Clinic stayed closed weeks longer than necessary because of this.
Do they really have to ship it all the way to Spain though? When there are plenty of Caribbean nations right there they could stop in to minimize both fuel costs and impacts of the Jones Act?
No U.S. supplier will sell to PR utilities because they are broke and don’t pay bills. They are broke because many in PR don’t pay utility bills. PR is getting what they pay for.

You haven’t even read the Jones Act, have you? There is a waiver process if there are no American flagged ships that can meet the demand. If you really care about helping the people in Puerto Rico, go read the law then file the paper work. Complaining on X does nothing to help
