Your mileage may vary on the wisdom of this, but I think it’s a little bit under-appreciated in recent conservative discourse that to a large extent the civil service is a jobs program for veterans.

As an approach to creating a cost-effective civil service it’s obviously not a great idea. But as veterans policy it seems at least plausibly correct.
I think you have a point but all you had to do was add 'hired in last year' to make it more relevant. When you do that the number the liberal journalist wants to be high goes down. This is why we are frustrated with journalists man. Maybe an honest mistake but like 2 pt out
They also don’t realize how many Fed workers vote for Republicans. A significant minority of Fed workers I’ve worked with professionally are conservative. Attacking them obviously kneecaps GOP in VA, but will hurt across the country. Even biggest MAGA fed worker will turn now.
Government jobs programs are peak economic waste imo. If a private business that has to get its own money by legitimate means wants to operate as a jobs program then no problem. But using tax payer dollars to create permanent position, many that could be automated, drives

Singapore style - elite employees in the government at elite salaries ain’t a future for the US. Anybody going to a government job in the future would need their heads examined
Much of this has to do with pension portability, you can increase a federal pension or collect two pensions by continuing your federal service.
About 6% of US population are veterans About 30% of federal civilian workforce are veterans About 87% used veteran hiring "preference" for civil service positions
We like our veterans but we don’t think the govt should be a jobs program. These vets can get honest jobs producing goods and services in the private sector.
That’s a good point. I do think those numbers are skewed by the VA though, which I assume contributes significantly to those non-DOD numbers
I’m one…and many of us are fully behind this drawdown We’ve known for years it was needed. The agency I worked for grew from 5k to 20k when I was there. Unsustainable

Veterans get a huge advantage when applying for jobs so that is a big part as to why this is
Playing the veterans card is not going to win you arguments. The government needs to be run like a business, not like a charity. Over the years, these seats have become over inflated, unnecessary, and unmanaged. It's time to stop the wasteful spending
The vet - gov pipeline isn’t because vets can’t hack it anywhere else though, but because the government gives them preference in hiring. Drop the preference and more would go into private sector immediately.
