Yeah that was pretty much war for most of human history. Still is in many places on the planet.

Look at the estimates for civilian deaths during Iraq and Afghanistan. They're comparable.
Most estimates of civilian deaths are bullshit.
But it seems pretty obvious that Russia's war in Ukraine has been the cleanest major war in history. ~13,000 in three years.
The overwhelming majority of wars in human history were fought with the "let none survive" doctrine.
To be fair, the Soviet were poisoning wells and dropping land mines all over Afghanistan during their war.
Tons of terrorists were missed due to Obama-era extra work done to prevent and minimize civilian casualties. Even rules of engagement changed so that you couldn't fire back at terrorist drive-bys. Handcuffed our US military that allowed Taliban to continue.

The latter, yes, the US has put together so many guided weapons for a reason. The former, not really. The Russians are distinctly brutal in how they wage war, see the Circassian Genocide, the Brusilov Offensive, the winter war, Moscow Theatre Crisis, etc.

a better comparison would be what the Soviets did in Afghanistan vs. what we did in Vietnam. And also to use the estimates from an non-biased third party...

I can think of a regional power that does that, and apparently to an even greater extent than Americans: Israel. The amount of military advantage they forego to protect enemy civilians often strikes me as foolish
