"less than half of all respondents (48%) said they would be willing to pay $10 a month to strengthen Florida’s infrastructure to weather hazards"

if the 48% would be willing to pay $20, that wouldn't be an issue!
Forecast interest rate cuts will be cut for the first time in South Africa in four years, and some analysts are hoping this will turn the tide.

If they checked their insurance bills, they'd see they already spend much more than that.
I live in Florida. It's hard to deny climate change when you're on the front line.
Because they don't believe it would work? Because they don't trust the government to spend their $10/month effectively? They'd rather spend it on more insurance, or on more pumps, drains, and storm shutters for themselves?
At first I was like, "wow that's some beautiful waterfront property!"
This looks like high tide/storm surge. Other than head for higher ground, how do you strengthen for that?

Now if we could only get multiple devastating hurricanes to hit the mid-west. We might have able to get the public behind climate intervention.
Well if that is the case they can just have fun with the insane price of insurance down there instead. I seriously don't know why people still live in Florida anymore.
What percentage of people would say to pollsters that they would pay $10 a month to improve schools reduce crime, reduce illegal immigration etc. I want some points of comparison here.
My pinned tweet:
The feds should really stop bailing them out now that they don’t have the common sense to stay a politically competitive state
I wonder if the results would change at least a bit if it were "everyone paid $10 a month more in taxes" -- my $10 wouldn't do much, but everyone's $10 could do a lot.
Seems like we’ve identified the cohort whose insurance should be cut off.
Florida will build walls. Either before storms start raising neighborhoods regularly, or after.
They believe it because they can see it. It’s not even the hurricanes. The every day flooding is getting noticeably worse.

For the mere cost of an ad-supported streaming service you can avoid climate oblivion for yourself and posterity…”
They would leave Florida, as easy as they came. If they found another cheap place to play golf in and drink margaritas.
And yet: “Overall, most respondents said that climate change sparked their concern for the well-being of future generations (68%)”
We need to concentrate our cities into areas that are protected from floods and abandon low-lying areas
I think this reflects a common sentiment that the government already has money to make those improvements, but they're spending it elsewhere.
So like 65% of Floridians want government to do "more", then they elect Republicans on an "I will do less" platform.
Won't pay $10/month to the government to shore up public infrastructure, but happy to pay $8/month to a billionaire so they can type out long diatribes about the government's failure to help them after a disaster....
“WOKE! It had tricked freedom loving Floridians into wanting to pay more in taxes”

I would be very unhappy if I was paying taxes to subsidize Floridians living on the coast. That’s their choice, not my problem
where are the insurance companies? I'd expect they're free to adjust premiums to reflect the cost of doing business in Florida.

Could it be that the working and middle class already know how this game is played? and they know full well 10 will become 20 then 30 then 50 then 100 and instead of being ringfenced for infrastructure it will be spent on Ukraine or blown on some contractor?
well then they definitely do not deserve to be subsidized by the rest of the country (@ Moskowitz)
Within a few years large sections of Florida’s coast will be uninsurable

Lmfao weighing losing everything and paying 10 bucks and the 10 bucks coming out on top is uniquely unhinged.
Then those folks that choose to opt out, should be on their own for their re-building....CA is tired of paying for their dumb decisions.
Jesus Christ, Twitter replies get dumber and dumber every time I peruse them. The next time I see a thoughtful reply from a blue account will be the first.
If it’s climate infrastructure- pumps, seawalls, etc, I’m all for it.
If it’s EV charging stations & subsidies for the wealthy to buy EV’s, NO THANKS.
Florida is full of berts. They are moving there from New Hampshire, I reckon. Every one of them thinks he’s King Knut, without understanding the message of that story.
The problem is the money doesnt fucking get spent to strengthen anything
It also sends a message the administration will be focused on appeasing the radical left. Expect:
Open Borders: Giving free medical, jobs, and other resources to illegal immigrants at the expense of Americans.
Green Energy: Enforcing extreme green energy policies leads to

Well, define "strengthen." How is anyone supposed to do a cost-benefit analysis on that.
Dude, I am not giving DeathSantis $10 for no reason. The chance that money will be used for climate is absolutely nil.
Idiotic article. Nobody in Florida will give a penny to a full-blown denialist administration for obvious reasons. My money will go to building a wall to protect rich people on barrier islands or improve drainage of golf course.
Should rephrase as an investment or insurance. There's a cost to doing nothing
People always want the goodies but they never want to pay for them. SMDH
All these GOP states deny climate change, but want money from fed govt to recover. Talks about fiscal responsibility but does not care when they need money without accountability.
As Governor Walz defends the tax increases, Minnesota’s economy has struggled. Since the COVID-19 economic recovery began in the second quarter of 2020, Minnesota’s growth has lagged the national average by 5.5 percentage points.
Yeah, they think everyone else should pay for their decision to live in that swamp.
Is that because of an unwillingness to invest or disillusionment with the institution that would see it out?
They laughed at us Midwesterners when they left us and headed to Florida. Fuck them.
Why?
Because they think the protective measures would be futile?
Do they believe the money would be squandered to ineptness and corruption?
Or... stick with me here, is $120/yr actually a big deal for a sizeable portion of FL households? Think disposable income & marginal goods.

Klein was 100% right to say this - it's simply absurd to describe any country where millions of its subjects are denied the right to vote on the basis of ethnicity as a liberal democracy. I can't believe I even have to debate this with people!
It's crazy that Trump tried to murder Congress and Liz Cheney was the only one who took it personally
jim justice switching parties in 2017 knowing he would run for senate in 2024 as a republican and be chronically absent due to health issues, giving democrats a near senate majority

New: Jim Justice is almost certainly WV's next senator. If he shows up to work is another question
Sources say Justice is chronically absent. Some are concerned for his health + doubt he’ll regularly show up to votes
That'll matter in the Senate. A lot politico.com/news/2024/10/1
