now more than ever you shouldn’t be paying down tech debt. just wait it out and pray the software agents will do it

This is the tech equivalent of getting into a lot of debt thinking the impending hyperinflation will allow you to pay it all back by selling a marble.
based on how people use software agents today, I think we're going to see a exponential increase in technical debt and cruft limited only by how fast we are able to ask for it.
AI is great at low level stuff, but to start reliably paying back tech debt, we need at least another magnitude or more on attention. But on the contrary, the tech debt being created right now by non technical coders using AI will likely never be paid and is growing fast.
No. I wouldn't want to write any piece of code until I perfect my architecture, create my custom js runtime, squeeze those extra milliseconds gains using rust, and make it fault-tolerant on my K8 cluster for potentially scaling it to billion users.
Maybe this is how Adobe software gets saved — because Premiere and After Effects have 30 year old code bases and are effectively millennials with chronic back pain.
I wish you could share your view of what it means to pay down on tech debt From my perspective tech debt is something created by a sort of neglected foundation or cut corners along the way What do you see as paying down on it?
meaning refactoring, deleting unused or duplicated code paths, unnesting stuff, separation of concerns, doing less critical performance improvements , etc
Tech debt seems like some of the hardest stuff to solve, touching big area, no room for being wrong
tech debt is just a fancy way of saying u gotta clean ur room. it's not gonna magically disappear. just gotta do it. like, now.
Hahaha, bro, are you trying to troll people into failing? What’s up with this belief about tech debt? You’re effectively saying “don’t pay down your debt and hope you can fire people later”

I *don't* think they will do this automatically for large enough / complex enough codebases for a few years at least. They can barely do this for single files that are >16kB. But accelerating guided refactors, absolutely. Just maybe have them write tests first.
i wish they would just write tests for me first, writing tests is so boring.
this has to be a blatant shitpost lol i would say the opposite. the cleaner your codebase is, and the simpler your overall service architecture, the easier it will be to fine-tune agents to get up to speed on your codebase
software will slowly get shittier and shittier, then all at once... there is no software.
exactly how I felt in early 2020, charge up the credit cards and hope the banks fail
Oh I'm stockpiling the debt like you wouldn't believe. I got so much of it you'll say Please! Mercy, Mr. Unfortunate Conflict of Evidence! We can't take on more tech debt! This ship can't take it! And I'll say Shut your trap wench! Keep piling moar debt! Anyways, boy oh boy

How do you build the software agents using tech debt ridden software? Sounds like waiting for the bus even though you're the bus driver.
well...The funny thing is, at the point where an AI can code anything that can be coded in any programming language, programming languages will be totally irrelevant, the AI will be able to clearly see the assembly code that will solve the problem with a luminous clarity
what % of my revenue are the overlords going to charge for the cleanup though?
Like waiting for ultra inflation to dilute the value of the money you borrowed from the bank to buy that Mercedes
Noooooo, the tech debt will make it into the agents and then everything will be ruined. (If you aren’t building agents, this doesn’t apply, but then why aren’t you building agents?)
I’m going to email a screenshot of this to my boss next time he complains about my stuff

"And magic happens!" That's what my team used to joke about problems suddenly disappearing without anybody spending any effort.
When the AGI rewrites its engine from scratch, dispensing with the NVIDIA driver, with Torch and with Python, then all software tech debt will be repudiated.
I will use you as an excuse. 😁 "You need to do this refactoring/documentation/Jira!" "Hm, roon told me not to because the Eschaton will!"
No but you should be paying your own debt, especially things like credit card debt that's not coupled to hard assets. Weird things are going to happen to the labor market in only 3-5 years. So prepare.
