Since Studio Ghibli is trending, worth noting the mind-boggling effort Hayao Miyazaki and his team put into a film. Each has 60k-70k frames, all hand-drawn and painted with water color. This 4-second clip (โ€œThe Wind Risesโ€) took one animator 15 months to do. In the documentary โ€œ10 Years with Hayao Miyazakiโ€, the legendary Japanese filmmaker talks to one of his animators (Eiji Yamamori) after they complete the crowd scene. The exchange is gold: โ–ซ๏ธMiyazaki: โ€œGood job.โ€ โ–ซ๏ธYamamori: โ€œItโ€™s so short, thoughโ€ โ–ซ๏ธMiyazaki: โ€œBut it was worth it.โ€ The animator gets a second of joy (heโ€™s pumped) but on to the next. *** Link to doc: www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/sh

The animation process of Akira (1988). This makes me appreciate this masterpiece even more

This was Miyazakiโ€™s response to seeing an ai demo years ago: โ€œI am utterly disgustedโ€, โ€œI would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.โ€
15 months to do a 4 second clip... which will be done with AI in a couple of hours at most. Thats how fast innovation is going. We are going into a world where you turn on the TV and choose to watch a new Anime Series everyday if you want...
AI is amazing, but Miyazaki created this style and was also great atโ€ฆ writing a story that speaks to people, stays with them, makes them fall in love with their lives and humanity, revising it, changing their minds, getting the performances right, the music right, the sound
They're great films but I feel like all these AI bros now losing their minds over "Studio Ghibli style" would have never watched them when they first came out. It's like seeing your favorite band go mainstream and the fanbase is now made up of the most annoying people possible.
๐Ÿ‰ Fun fact: Every dragon scale on our FlyQuest Edition tells a story! Our designers integrated dragon elements into: ๐Ÿ”ฅ Pop-out lumbar panels (like dragon's breath!) ๐Ÿ”ฅ Side wing patterns (dragon wings, anyone?) ๐Ÿ”ฅ Custom jersey-inspired stitching ๐Ÿ”ฅ High-contrast team colors

As AI-generated art becomes ubiquitous, we will be surrounded by art that is technically perfect but devoid of soul. It's not the technique that makes Miyazaki's films mind-blowingly great, it's the humanity behind each one. I'm not just talking about the story but the
They are legends for their creativity, a perfect and vicious example of AI terminating a line of work, though economically as source of income, and not as a human passion. Like he says, it will still be worth it. But the machines are coming no doubt ๐Ÿค–
Miyazaki saying that probably made that guys whole year. Guy was a slavedriver and I imagine faint with real praise.
Audio engineers used to take razor blades to physical tape and splice cuts together. Now you just press a button and AI removes all the dead space.

This trend is a huge insult to Miyazaki and all his work and all the animators who worked with him !!
Wind rises is my favorite ghibli work. The earthquake scene while on the train is insane. And the transition scenes of flight- just beautiful.
Weโ€™re going to the point that a machine takes out our creativity and makes us misunderstand that we are genius
Totally agree! Miyazaki's attention to detail is next level. It's what makes their films so magical.
