I'm not a pilot but I have to imagine that you have to be an absolute BADASS to skim the water in what is basically a flying tank, over and over all day long, and do it with the accuracy it takes to scoop up 1,000+ gallons of water and not have an accident. My hat is off to these pilots!!

Let me get this straight fire departments were not allowed to use ocean water pumped from the beaches because its salt water not fresh water? Soooooooo?? The have a desalination device on the Plane ????
I had a chance to assist to one of the those guy training, they work for fire management (SOPFEU) here in Quebec. The guys knew we'd be there and where. We were on the edge of a very small lake, maybe 2km long. Then they arrived. They dived almost vertically into the lake, only

How the Canadair CL-215 Handles Shifting Water During Firefighting Missions Ever wonder how a firefighting plane like the iconic Canadair CL-215 manages the challenge of scooping and carrying tons of water without losing stability? It’s all about smart design and skilled

All of these fire fighting pilots are insanely skilled. Today I watched 4 DC 10 runs where pilots took overloaded old planes and flew them down into a canyon - dropped tons of retardant (flying 200 feet off the deck in insane winds with thermal and ground effect creating

Here is a mini-docu on the Super Scooper. We need a fleet of this.

California has access to these planes and could use ocean water. The CL-415 Super Scooper is the only plane in the world that was designed specifically to fight wildfires. The aircraft performs a dangerous dive down to a body of water, scoops up 1,400 gallons of water in 12

I want Tom Cruise to make a movie about these guys! Are they grizzled forty year veterans or young hot-doggers? Either way they are totally awesome
I would guess that most of these pilots are former Navy pilots. The only comparison to this kind of flying is landing on a ship in the middle of the night with rolling seas. Our Navy pilots are the best in the world.
Nice to see someone saying something POSITIVE about the first responders fighting this thing. Aren’t those planes Canadian?
To fly a plane that close to the water takes skill. Doing it while while taking on 14,000 pounds of cargo only to fly it over some of the most unpredictable winds and sheers to drop said cargo as close to the ground as possible in mountainous terrain... God bless these

I’ve been flying for 40 years. That’s what we call a touch and go. It’s not difficult at all, although it’s typically done on a runway. Landing on water is different and requires a different skill set - but it’s not particularly hard. Cool video, though.
I am a pilot. And you're 100% correct. These guys are badass. Weight and balance are critical elements of flight. The ability to fly these planes when the weight changes so dramatically during refill and dumping is extremely difficult. Hats off to these pilots!

You do. My hubby was a Firebase guy for ages. It's a tough gig, and the fire tanker dudes are the baddest of the bad-asses, right up there with the chopper guys.
These pilots are the real deal, putting their skills to the test every day to keep us safe. Their bravery and precision are truly admirable, and we're lucky to have them on the front lines. Thanks for sharing, SaltyGoat!
I agree! I was paddle boarding in a reservoir next to foothills in Colorado. 2 of those tankers dropped in and scooped up water probably 8 times. It was awesome to watch. Exactly my word β€˜baddass!’ Chatfield reservoir, CO
When the power goes out, can you access your well water? Get a Flojak backup pump and secure critical water access for yourself and those that rely on you.
Can you imagine fishing on a medium sized lake in Canada and a water bomber drops down to scoop water just a few hundred yards away. It happened to us several years ago. Canadian wild fires in NW Ontario. Our camp operator warned us the day we got there that there was a

How is it that these planes can scoop water by skimming the surface of the ocean when other planes that try to land on the ocean with passengers will crash? Different design? Less experienced?
I’m not a pilot, but my sons are and this is an amazing feat of aviation mastery! And then to be under an emergency situation on top of it….. incredible precision, courage, skill….. these are actual heroes!
They normally get their water from lakes, not oceans with waves, so this is even extra hard for the pilots. Amazing work
You might want to also consider thanking the hundreds of engineers and thousands of manufacturing personnel that can design, develop and make these amazing crafts that can safely do the job!
I saw something on this recently and apparently mist of the skill is in dropping the water and not in the way you might think. Of course accuracy, bit more to do with the stress on t he e airframe with dumping tons of water very quickly. Planes have had their wings rip off when

Not so fast there, cowboy. I need to know the race, gender identify, and pronouns of that pilot before I can say that this is "badass" or not! πŸ˜‰
Dumb question, but I’m assuming this is the LA fires, right? Next question is that I thought they didn’t use salt water in aerial firefighting because it mucks up the aircraft mechanisms and also later prevents anything from growing on the land where it is dumped?
Years ago I had a Martin Mars waterbomber pass over my house three times to scoop up seawater then head a short distance to extinguish a nasty 1-acre brush fire... Three times in 2 hours, barely 200 feet overhead! That fire was dead in under 3 hours from reporting.
I am a pilot... And yes. that takes a ton of skill and praying.. but then he has to go fly that monster like it's an F-22 raptor. Those guys are among the best of the best big bird pilots. 🫑
I honestly can't believe how these pilots are able to take off with 1000 gallons of water sloshing away in a tank like this....this is crazy! And now they decided salt water is okay? Why now?
Thanks Goat ! We Canadians πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ may not have an effective functioning military, but we do pride ourselves on our search and rescue πŸ›Ÿ skills
These pilots are insanely great. You have no idea how hard it is to pilot a craft that large, slow, low and heavy. Hats off.
I think the landing is pretty standard for a water aircraft. I think the tricky part is constantly trimming the aircraft as the water fills the hold and the aircraft gets heavier and you have to probably increase power to adjust for the weight which is around 12,000 pounds for

I am a commercial pilot and this is really not difficult at all. Still a noble job, flying anything really. Hats off to them!🫑
… and a few minutes later, these exceptional pilots (often former jet fighter pilots) drop this water only a few feet above the flames, often in difficult terrain …..
It's especially difficult to pilot a plane with that kind of a dramatic weight shift during loading, unloading, and turning... let alone having to run the controls and levers with those GIGANTIC BALLS between one's legs.
As a 40 year veteran of professional flying, now retired, you are correct. Very difficult. Takes a calm sea. Calm sea creates a real problem with depth perception. To handle that plane within inches is extremely difficult. Then a rapidly changing CG as water is scooped. Hat

Agree. But I am still at a loss over the fact that the residents picked NOT using ocean water to put out fires because it will hurt the surrounding plants over saving properties. πŸ™„πŸ™„
I'm a retired commercial pilot. Years ago, in Boise, ID, I visited the InterAgency Fire Center just to marvel at the nature of their mission. Also former military, the pull to apply was strong. If there were ever a finer example of "Top Guns"...you're looking at it in action.πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’ͺ
I am a pilot and these CL-415s are awesome machine but a fistful to fly. You’re flying with two hands - a two crew workout. They’re not landing on small lakes up North, this is the Pacific with swells. Yes, the Canadians flying these are indeed special.
