"The Russian coal industry is entering its worst crisis in the last 30 years. Supplies to China in the first half of 2024 fell by 8%. India has cut its coal imports from Russia by 55% and Turkey by 47%. Russia's total coal exports fell by 11.4% in January-July." Good news.

Stalling the global transition to clean energy is another key reason Putin backs Trump. It is going to devastate Russia’s economy.
For those laughing off US sanctions saying it's ineffective don't know how "financial boiling the frog" strategy works. It may looked like the frog is doing fine at first until it's too late to do anything about it. All the boiled frog can do is die.
The rail network is the problem. The Russian rail network is collapsing as a direct result of sanctions. The working trains and flatcars bring weapons in from NK and China. There are not enough bearings for coal hoppers. They are in the end-stage of equipment cannibalization.
If the west was serious about sanctions on Russia, the Russian economy and war machine would be in terminal collapse.
