Yes we all know that a consumer tax that is paid when you purchase foreign goods is also known as a “tariff”. Good catch!
Argentina was starting from a much different place than the US. Literally any good you bring into the country would be taxed at 100%. My friend got caught bringing in 2 new iPhones and had to pay thousands of dollars at the airport. We are not the same.
Argentina has no geo-political reason to have high tariff barriers. They have plenty of good exports, a highly educated population, and loads of natural resources. Only problem is the country's obsession with corrupt socialists.
Import taxes are different from tariffs. Import taxes apply indiscriminately across all imported goods. Tariffs are set by country of origin. As a pro-labor conservative I favor tariffs inversely proportional to worker rights at source.
And Argentina is running both a budget surplus and trade surplus right now. If they are trying to dial in an appropriate balance for their economy, they seem to be interested in a balanced trade while maintaining a surplus.
What I find most interesting about this thread Musk made is how woefully ignorant Trump supporters are about tariffs. The media completely failed to explain the concept to the American public.
I get where you're going with this and in theory yes it may seem hypocritical. But you cannot compare South American import taxes with the tariffs being considered for the US. Just go to any mall in Miami and you'll understand the difference immediately.
do you understand they are actually different things or are you being retarded on purpose? tariffs are a specific type of import tax.
Wait so do we just start referring to tariffs as import taxes and post about how based it is to not have them? I’m ready.
I think it's very important for anyone who likes both Trump and Milei to realize that Argentina has been governed the way Trump is now promising to govern for decades, and Milei's revolution is to undo the Argentinian version of Trumpism.
Points to an elegant solution for keeping campaign promises: Trump imposes $2T of tariffs. DOGE recommends eliminating $2T of wasteful import taxes. Return to status quo, but now Trump & Musk can bask in the adulation for their genius. Everyone wins.
It's sad but true... Family businesses are often so busy with day-to-day operations that they miss out on MAJOR tax-saving opportunities. So here are 3 easy ways to save money on your taxes this year that you may not have known about. What’s one tax strategy that’s saved your

“Elon Musk is DK - Dunning Kruger. Coming this fall to your favorite streaming service for one season! Watch as a wealthy former programmer attempts to buy a major global power. Is he in over his head? Find out early 2025. But yes, yes he is”
We are being overtaken by fascists and media is not sounding the alarms because they’re too busy laughing that not sounding the alarm BEFORE the election and even now isn’t in their best corporate interests or their own employee paychecks from their bosses. Shame on them

One thing I’m certain of is that there will be a lot of Trump voters who end up saying: “I didn’t mean like this.”

Learning in real time the effects of tariffs. These “renegades” aren’t serious people.
I don't get how people see this as inconsistent. US gets to decide for itself while Argentina has to do what US companies want. This is fully consistent with the far right chauvinist world view.
You guys are so disingenuous. He’s referring to the tax individuals pay on personal items they order up to $1000, which will now be raised to $3000. This is not a tariff, which businesses with overseas operations and suppliers have to pay when they ship those products in.
