In case anyone else missed the memo: the telehealth providers like e.g. Amazon One Medical will apparently greatly decrease the amount of tapdancing one needs to get a trivial prescription. Tried it after a number of people suggested it yesterday vis strep.

*tap tap tap in app describing symptoms, expecting a telehealth visit* Provider: No need for a meeting, this can be an email. Sounds like you might have strep. Come in for a no-appointment test and we’ll get you sorted. Me: Does it move your needle if I tell you that both kids
Me: … were diagnosed with strep yesterday after reported exposure, consistent symptoms, and a rapid test. Then they were prescribed amoxicillin and are now feeling much better. Provider: Oh you very probably have strep then. Sending RX to pharmacy; come back if it doesn’t work.
I understand that the healthcare system needs to do an awful lot that is not “the smallest amount of healthcare which definitely requires a license to perform” but given that this is exactly that, glad there is an almost rational way to access it.
Several folks mentioned that they were surprised I didn’t use it already and I blame CBP for not putting it in the packet Things That Happened While You Rip Van Winkled In Japan For 20 Years.
Yes it’s awesome. Prescription delivered to my door next day. Telling everyone I know There’s some trivial stuff they won’t prescribe for some reason (eg oral antifungal. They warned me before paying for an appt). K Health did. $50 total, texted with an MD. The future is awesome
Call on Doc is superb and basically takes an hour to when you can walk into CVS and walk out with your medication. Cheaper than a F2F doctor too, not to mention faster.
Had a great experience with Blueberry Pediatrics $220/yr, covers all kids, 24/7 pediatric telehealth, writes prescriptions and school notes etc
I’m trying CVS virtual visit. Local urgent care doesn’t renew any prescriptions, even those that are eligible for a renewal, so to get a prescription-required $35 asthma inhaler I have to get in-person-examined again for $208 plus time spent. Virtual care to the rescue (tomorrow)
This is similar to the degree of concierge care that some chronic illness patients are able to arrange In my case, I just make a quick phone call or text to my docs’ personal cell phones and ask for the specific prescription / lab test / procedure I want, and they’ll send in

I’m spending $49 to order myself at tsh at labcorp bc it will cost $70 copay to go see the doctor to get them to do it.
Generally this also applies to telehealth with hospital/pcp networks now, especially if like me your insurance is through the insurance arm of said hospital network. Other than for vaccines/etc most stuff the doctor will prescribe <10 minutes from app open
Yes! I’ve used two services at different times in the last 8 years, and now have a health pro with tele/txt access. It restores some faith that we’ll sort this stuff out. 😅😅
Thank you

I'd like to see more Twitter commentary from users of Amazon One Medical.
This is the main gimmick of companies like Hims (online prescription hair loss drugs that require a survey + a photo of your hairline—a doctor writes you a script asynchronously). I’ve seen it for weight loss drugs (ozempic and the like)—though it didn’t seem price competitive
What are downsides to One Medical? Something about trusting Amazon with any kind of healthcare totally sketches me out.
We stopped going to the pediatrician's office for strep when we noticed that their rapid strep swabs...were available for purchase on Amazon.
Similar things happening in addiction medicine as well, with fantastic results. When the illegal alternative is ludicrously cheap and can be at your door in 10 minutes, asking people to attend multiple in-person visits is largely a losing proposition.
It’s really incredible how an extra $200 per year makes the medical system operate the way it should in the first place.
