Lots of place names in New York state connected to Lake Ontario. A town, a park, a highway, a vineyard, a fruit farm. Even historic Fort Ontario, first built in 1755. It served as an emergency shelter for holocaust refugees during WW2.

I'll just have you know that Canadians or anyone in the rest of the world doesn't give a shit. The lake is still Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico.

Even if it was, it's convenient from our perspective to name the lake after what's on the other side of it. Lake/Gulf America provides no descriptive value.

When Mt. McKinley was re-named, when any building w/ someone named pre-1860 was being re-considered, I said the pendulum would swing. That if we changed long-standing names for the cultural flavor of the time, it would't always be liked Took longer than I though, but here we are
