This is a huge step in the right direction — and long overdue.
The Federal Motor Safety Standards have real teeth. If this rule comes into effect, carmakers will finally have to address how car bloat endangers pedestrians.

Some caveats: The proposal doesn’t address
Ways that car bloat harms cyclists
Big cars’ massive blind spots
Car bloat problems beyond safety (pollution, highway damage, etc)
Is the new proposal a panacea? No.
Is it real progress? Absolutely.

Always laugh at the guy with a 3/4 ton raised extended cab that is perfectly clean, not a scratch on it, and a bed that looks brand new. Tells me they dont actually use the truck for anything other than driving around town.
It won't get us lighter cars, just more techno gadgetry and spyware. This is America after all, and I no longer have any faith in the place or its government.
Nah. Proper solution would be to require CDL for anything over 2T or so and tax registrations by weight.
Looks like I wrote up this newsletter post just in time!

I suspect EV SUVs are immediately going to add a ton of additional weight in the form of battery capacity to get around these rules. They will justify this in the form of marketing themselves as the only EV SUV that are still "rugged" after the rules go in effect. x.com/DavidZipper/st…
I actually drive a Gwagen because it's safer for my family, so hopefully this regulation attempt will be struck down
Buy a 1 ton instead of a 3/4 ton and you exceed the 10,000 lb. limit and are free of those restrictions. Instead of an F250, buy an F350, or a Chevy 3500 or RAM 3500. Almost the same price, same size truck but licensed differently.
I have always asked where are the air bags for people OUTSIDE of the speeding monster bearing down on mom and her toddler?

The government encourages large pickups.

This sounds like a great area to cut government overreach!Very sick of the nanny state!
Why do we have to create new rules to help enforce existing ones? Isn’t it illegal to hit pedestrians already?
You'll only be happy when the Government is the only organization building the same stamped out, super safety car and doesn't sell it for a profit.
I hope the Motor Safety Standards people look at side mirror placement as well— it’s hard to see who/what might be in the crosswalk while turning left in a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Suspect the reason this is finally happening is that the automakers are realizing huge electric EVs are just too expensive to make any money off of.
I was attending a session on AV this morning at the and brought this / Economist article up in my question. Good to see the universe is acting in accordance.
Like, most people don't even need cars this big. They're a hazard on the road because they block everyone's view and their regular fucking headlights might as well be count as high beams the way it shines directly into my eyes
Well since the SCOTUS gutted all federal agencies... this means nothing.
Unfortunately it will take 20 years to clear the current fleet of hazards. In the meantime, we'll need restrictions for such vehicles in cities, seems to me.
I can't wait for this to be enacted and immediately stopped by a nation wide injunction from the fifth circuit.
I'm sure some "pro-life" politicians are going to criticize this even though it will save lives.
Have you been driving at night on a dark highway and have one of these tanks heading straight towards you? My car was filled with light. I couldn't see, I thought aliens arrived.. do something about the lights!

I’ll leave this here:
No, it will just continue to increase the cost of these vehicles with more govt regulation.

I've been bitching to anyone whose ear was close enough about vehicle size, hopefully this at least shows some progress
i misread this as "aimed at increasing massive SUVs..." and i thought this was very typical of America lol
Good read on the subject is High and Mighty: The Dangerous Rise of the SUV by Keith Bradsher.
The SUV craze had alot to do with leveraging
Consumer anxiety and egotism.
Insurance breaks intended for work trucks.
Safety and CAFE breaks intended for work trucks.
Repeal irs tax code 179 while you are at it and incentivize smaller cars for businesses..
They are likely just looking to add hoods that act like air bags for pedestrians. Apparently it kind of works in Europe's crowded low speed city centers. Call it another $1000 government mandate that will make the SUV even heavier...
The left hate the vehicle choices free Americans take, so they’ll try to regulate those choices out of existence
EPA mandates fleet mileage rules. The Big Three can't profit enough from small cars so they take advantage of the light truck loophole to make ever bigger and popular SUVs and pickups. The Feds want EVs and the manufacturers lose big time on them. Now this potential road block.
One day the right direction will be building tank resistant sidewalks and we’ll all doomed.
Nobody wants to acknowledge it but it’s the EPA’s own regulations that encourage bigger cars and bigger footprints of the same cars - it’s the only way for manufacturers to me increasing standards of cars to have higher MPGs - if you increase the size the requirements are less

More socialist policies invading American private lives. What next? Car choices based only on family size? Tragic overreach.
So tell us - what cars are there that won’t hurt someone if they hit them while moving?
Ensuring a Democratic majority depends on winning in Ohio, Montana, Nevada, and Arizona—critical battlegrounds. If Republicans take these, they could control the Senate.
Chip in $4 to our Defend the Senate Fund and help keep these battleground seats BLUE.
The federal government created the problem with cheap money policies from the fiat pumper federal reserve. The idea that they can solve the problem they created is laughable. This seems to be a routine with the federal government “we created this problem but trust us to fix it!”
First step is repeal the CAFE act, and allow tiny foreign trucks to be built and sold domestically.
Why, you ask?
Because consumers don’t want “pedestrian safety” but they do, and have for decades, want smaller trucks and that has the by product of being safer.
Pick yo battles.
Instead of letting the federal government micromanage even more of our economy why not just abolish the fed and let interest rates rise to whatever the market decides? Less people would be able to afford these monstrous vehicles without long term low interest rate loans.
This country gets gayer every day and I blame the bugmen.
So what about safety features which automatically slam on the brakes? These safety features are already on these vehicles, so what’s deal? Or is this just another mandate to create solutions to made up problems? gmc.com/safety-features
No its not, the cars are that big because they demanded it in the first place. Relying on them to fix it makes you the biggest retard in the room.
Pure underhanded bureaucracy at the hands of unelected government employees. This has nothing to do with safety. It's to push smaller cars.
Since you're so worried about pedestrians, is it safe to assume we should get rid of EVs too? What about trains, semi trucks, and busses?
Now Congress has to approve any rule changes, wonderful restoration of democracy.
The fight for the House could boil down to key races in California and New York. It's not only about turning red seats blue but also ensuring our blue seats stay put for a solid majority. Would you donate $10 to help us beat GOP contenders and secure Democratic seats?
Hopefully Trump wins and kills this nonsense. EVs are the real danger, they are 20% heavier than ICE cars the same size. Momentum is mass times velocity. Simple physics.

Funny, I don't remember "debating" giving the Buffalo Bills' owners $1 billion to rebuild the same stadium next to a sea of parking in the middle of the Buffalo exurbs.
