Denmark has a highly multi-party political system.
The incumbent Social Democratic prime minister who secured re-election had previously run a minority government that was supported by three other progressive parties — the Social Liberals, the Green Left, and the Red-Greens.
In the run-up to the election, Denmark's main center-right party, the market liberal Venstre, split.
Former prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen started a new party, The Moderates, with the explicit goal of using leverage in parliament to force a grand coalition.
Fredericksen's party won the most votes in the election, but Rasmussen's gambit succeeded.
There is now a three-party majority coalition led by the Social Democrats but featuring Rasmussen's party and the rump Venstre that he split from.
Leonhardt's upshot stands — Fredericksen both rescued traditional social democracy from the fate it is experiencing in most of Europe and also boxed out the far-right.
But I think when you consider the party swap, it's a somewhat more comprehensive push to the center.
