It's not consistent with the popular narrative on bee colony collapse, but bee colony numbers have been stable in America since the mid-1990s The fall was all from the '60s to then. But guess what: numbers are all over the place globally!

My theory is that mosquitoes are directly related to the decline in honey bees and other insects. How much would the use of insecticides decline if mosquitoes were no longer in the picture?

First look at North America. America's numbers, above, look really bad. But throw Canada and Mexico in and the ecological collapse case looks weak. They're remarkably stable.

In fact, look most anywhere and the bees are doing alright. It's just North America, and America specifically, where the bees have lost ground.

Most of this is, frankly, a market thing. Demand for American-made honey isn't so high that it encourages producers like it used to. But in terms of problems for existing hives, the biggest issue is the varroa mite. Lucky for Asia, their bees naturally murder these mites.

A missing piece here. Are the numbers stable because the bees aren't dying in larger numbers from the mid-1990s to today, or are they stable because beekeepers are working harder to replenish lost hives?
I don't doubt plenty of people are struggling, but the USDA's data show stability overall, reduced CCD recently, and growing per-colony yields recently (which are still down a bit from earlier).
The challenge to this would be that the commercial bee colonies are made up of a very homogenous strain of bees. A little bit like bird numbers are thriving because of cultivating commercial chicken farming. Some ecologists argue diversity of bee pollinators remains vital
Local non-honey bees are experiencing larger and ongoing declines than commercial honey bees, though these are less well tracked. In fact, commercial honey bees may crowd out other local bee species important for pollinating local plants.
Recently visited Europe and was accosted so frequently by bees when sitting outside that I was dumbfounded. Literally dozens of bees flying around our table and boldly landing on us and our food over and over again. There are plenty of bees.

Terrific news for Marine Le Pen: the French left is campaigning *against* air conditioning amid a heat wave while her far-right party is promising a sweeping expansion of cooling equipment.
Akshually Italy is an export-oriented, high-tech manufacturing economy that even by economists' standards is larger than the UK's despite a smaller population. Italy is a major machine tool exporter. Tesla got its giga-presses from a boutique Italian firm outside of Milan.

A study of 1452 undergrads at Northwestern and Michigan between 2023 and 2025 found that 88% pretended to hold more left wing views than they actually had in order to succeed socially or academically.
