single stair midrises aren't more dangerous!! Pew Research study looked at fire risk in single stair buildings. this matters because most US/Canadian cities require double stair: consuming ~10% additional space just for stairs and increasing costs up to 13%!

these costs + standard USA zoning issues means that it's really hard to build these mid rises - even if they're extremely desirable AND when we do build them, they are frequently suboptimal for humans + over priced

Paris is filled with Haussmannian 6 story complexes - surprisingly denser than NYC! *liberal definition of metro vs city used here lmao

liberal use of laneways and single stair tower houses could both dramatically increase density in a human/livable way while making neighborhoods more walkable and friendly. Live with your friends! Have local cafes embedded in the neighborhood!

single Iranian midrises >>>> corporate america block maximizers. it's literally illegal to build this kind of mixed use walkable urban architecture

single stair is used frequently around the world and there haven't been deaths attributed to the single stair design! in the United States! (NYC has single stairs that aren't legal to build anymore / legal to build @ 6 stories

I really think our building aesthetics could learn a lot from whatever you might call this style / iranian mid rises vs BLUE GLASS AND STEEL MAXXING

it's so funny the comments on this and connected posts are totally copenhagened out
"...The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Center for Building in North America..." You mean that an organization with an explicit goal of reforming building codes would fund a study finding that...building codes need reform! Can't wait for the Pew/Philip Morris study showing that

having double stairwells takes up more space and costs more money yeah, but its also worth mentioning the effects it has on apartment design and layout. e.g. the hallway that splits buildings in half connecting those stairwells severely limits the options for windows and airflow
The point of double stair is redundancy and higher - so you say it actually never was useful to have those properties? (Or not often enough that it would be worth requiring them)
This is also a reason why almost all American apartment complexes have 1 long corridor with apartments on its sides, and all floor plans have windows at only one side. Almost all floor plans are identical in American apartments.
good luck getting out of the single stair mid rise when the fent junkies living at the bottom of the stairwell pass out after lighting their poorly contained bonfire. this is why we need 2 stairwells here.

This is one of those interesting things where the threshold is pretty sharp. I can beat every 4 year old in the world at chess, with 5 year olds it's unclear and depends on the current batch of prodigies, and with 6 year olds I don't stand even the slightest shadow of a chance.

Did you guys know that the word "daily" in the Lord's Prayer is a wild-guess translation of a Greek word found nowhere else but in the Gospels, and no one actually knows what it means???

a couple points, I guess: 1. Elon Musk is a good engineering manager; he knows intuitively what's possible for what cost 2. He's a bad every other kind of manager 3. More recently he started using drugs and that should handicap your predictions of his future performance

The important thing to realize about Elon Musk is that he became the richest guy in history essentially because he was an internet meme - “real-life Tony Stark!” - so the value of any company he touched went through the roof. The joke is that he then turned out to be a dolt. x.com/moreperfectus/…
being annoyed is the price you pay for community. it means having guests when you'd rather be alone. it means letting someone live with you even when they get on your nerves. it means showing up for events that you'd rather not go to. it means turning the other cheek.
